Every surgeon has her own pre-op preferences.

My surgeon didn't put me on any pre-op diet; just nothing by mouth after midnight.

You trust your surgeon, correct? If you don't, you should find a different surgeon. There are lots of different pre-surgical protocols, and no pre-op diet may be the minority but it is definitely one I have heard before. Trust your surgeon that he knows how best to prepare his patients for surgery. And get ready for the fact that your post-op diet will be different from other people's too -- because they are all different! You will exhaust yourself if you run off to poll the internet every time your doctor does something differently than other doctors do. If you don't understand why your doctor is doing something differently, ask him!

I am sure you will do great in surgery. Your doctor doesn't want to nick your liver and will do everything he can to protect your safety. Have faith -- but when you don't have faith, talk to your doctor about it! Good luck.

I didn't have one either. 18 months later I'm alive and thriving ;)

I didn't have a pre op diet either as far as the shrinking of the liver that typically is for those who have fatty liver disease.

Actually, it is not just for those with fatty liver disease. My doctor requires it for every patient. I do not have fatty liver disease. As a matter of fact, my doc takes a biopsy of the liver while he is in there if he thinks it may have any kind of damage so that treatment, or just awareness, can be taken care of. Mine looked good so I did not have a biopsy.

A lot of surgeons aren't requiring it now. In my opinion, I think it is a bad idea. I felt so exhausted and weak going into surgery after living on almost nothing for 2 weeks, then to continue living on nothing for almost 3-4 more weeks while healing.

I understand the liver shrinking, and I understand that some people need to "prove" they are committed to the change. But it just seems counter productive to run people down, then slice them up.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
