Should I be Concerned?

Recommended Posts

I had gastric sleeve surgery 2 weeks ago, and am finally starting to feel decent again. However, I am a bit concerned about some pain I am experiencing in my left wrist/arm. The area is warm to the touch, and hurts to touch. When I put my arm out and push my hand to the left, I have a nagging and sharp pain that runs along the muscle on the inside bone of the wrist/arm. It doesn't seem to get better, and hurts really badly when I touch it. Has anyone else had this problem post-op? Is it something I should be worried about and get checked out?

Thanks.

Call your doctor. It might be a blood clot or an infection from the IV.

Call your doctor. Swelling, pain, and heat are usually indicators of an infection. It can probably be cleared up with a dose of antibiotics and you'll be good to go. If you just had pain or just had swelling, I'd think maybe you had injured yourself, bumped a nerve, or twisted your arm the wrong way in your sleep. Throw in heat, and your body is trying to kill something. Give it a little help with some drugs and you should feel better quickly. Don't put ice on it like you would an injury even though that will make it feel better. The heat is good- let it work. Also, monitor it closely the next few hours...if it seems to be getting significantly worse, if it starts to swell, or if it starts to get red, hotter, squishier (like Fluid is trapped) or hard...go to the ER. If there is no major change, call your doctor in the morning.

Hope you feel better soon! :)

I called the doctor yesterday. Long story short- I had a CT last week and found a blood clot in my stomach. Well add another one to the list. I now have a blood clot in my wrist! He has put me on Xarelto for 4 weeks and wants to see me again next week. Lovely!

Sorry to hear that, but I am glad they caught it early.

Thankfully you contacted your PCP. We all mean well here, but the best sound advice was given to "call your doctor".

I have read posts by people that sound like infections, blood clots, cardiac issues, a leaking incision, negative reactions to a medicine, etc.

Some posters have a medical background or similar medical experiences, but certain symptoms should be mentioned to a doctor or nurse first.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
