Deciding to go to Mexico

Recommended Posts

A year out just for the initial consult? I could only imagine how far out the surgery wait list is. You might want to see if your PCP can refer to a different surgeon. Might want to check and see if you even need a referral. I did it kind of backwards and went to the surgeon pre-op visit first. I had to go back to my PCP to get the letter of recommendation, which was a little awkward. Dude was like "when were you gonna tell me".

As far as the pickle with your parents... That's a tough one. Would they consider paying for your surgery here in the US? Not sure what kind of insurance you have, but there will still be a good amount of cost to have it done in the US. Maybe let it die down and talk with them again about it.

Have you asked your mom why she objects to you going to Mexico? Perhaps you could allay her fears and overcome her objections. I'm presuming that it would be your own $ you'd be spending, not hers.

Do you mean your mother won't let you go as she is paying and will not pay if you are doing this in Mexico.

If you are paying, she could always op to go with you just to check things out. Post people have an idea about what it is suppose to look like and it is completely different. I had my surgery in Mexico and was really pleased with the way things looked and were handled, from the hotel to the hospital, to the care I received.

Other than that, I would find another surgeon whose wait list is not a year out.

I will say I had the same thoughts as your mother until I came to this forum. If I hadn't already started down my path I wouldn't have thought twice about going to Mexico,. You may have your mom browse this forum and read about the experiences people have had, it may be enough to change her mind. Or just tell her your going to spring break in Mexico.....j

Just kidding that wouldn't be nice. Best of luck on which ever way you decide. It's definitely life changing experience.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
