Eating & Drinking question

Recommended Posts

I know right after RNY they said you could not eat & drink at the same time, but is that forever? I've put a couple of pounds back on & I wonder if that is why. I'm going to do what I have to do. Thank you

What are you eating on a typical day?

@ Correct--forever. You should never, from now on, drink while eating. Stop drinking 30 minutes prior and wait 30 minutes after your meal as well.

@ I don't know. There are always so many variables. Are you still keeping a food journal? Are you tracking your Protein? Are you eating Protein first? Are you drinking enough Water? Are you exercising? These are all keys to success. So, it isn't just don't drink while you eat. I do recall in the past when some people plateaued, they would increase the amount of protein they were eating (lean protein) and they would start to lose again.

Let us know what works!

Thank you so much esskay77, you've been most helpful. My profile has my surgery date wrong, my RNY was May 2015

At 6 or 7 months after RNY surgery, I transitioned from the "Weight Loss" phase to the "Maintenance" phase. The approach in the "Maintenance" phase is different. Here is a short article of my perception of this phase.

I've always been told when in doubt....go back to basics & fundamentals. Start tracking portions, Fluid intake, and Protein. Make sure you are getting your Protein and Water in first.

Definately go back to the basics, you are not even a year out and should still be losing.

You might try a reset. Yes, food and drink together are a no no forever.

Just out of curiosity, what made you stop following that instruction? You might even check in with your nut to see if your diet is on track.

I will say that I believe the number 1 reason I personally have been successful is because I track everything in myfitnesspal. I know exactly where my Protein, carbs and calories are throughout the day. Because of this, I make better choices.

Honestly it is so easy to get off track if you don't pay attention to what and how much you are eating everyday.

Are you tracking?

I hated all the myfitnesspal tracking things. Mostly because you have to set things up first so it knows what to count and I just didn't have the patience for that. Was I missing something on how t use it?

I am 4 months post op and couldn't make it a day without my fitness pal. Set up was not very hard and it is a wonderful way to see your progress and keep track of what you are consuming. It's a small amount of work to help make our surgery more successful!

You may very well be not losing because of drinking with meals. If you don't wait afterwards the food is pushed through faster making you hungry sooner which leads to eating more often which = weight gain eventually! Stick the plan

For the first few months I stuck to this rule like crazy. Now I'll have a small sip or two with my meal if I'm eating something thick or kinda dry. I still stick to the no Water 30 before and especially after. It makes a big difference in staying full longer.

I'm only three months out and I weigh only once a week. I've been lax about tracking everything a couple of times and I have noticed that I lose a lot more weight when I am tracking. I would swear that I'm eating and drinking the same things, but writing it down somehow takes pounds off. I tried tracking online but I'm much better at carrying around my food diary and filling it in. I have actually started doing a little journaling in it too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
