Hiatal hernia repair during sleeve

Recommended Posts

I'm getting sleeved on February 10 and I have to get my hiatal hernia repaired during my sleeve and I wanna know what was recovery like... Was there a lot of pain did it effect your sleeve in any way? How long was your surgery? Etc? Any info will be helpful because I'm sooooo nervous now that I've been approved... I was so excited and anxious at first but now I'm second guessing but I think it's just all mental and nervousness!

Hiatal hernia repair is very common during this surgery. I had a hiatal hernia repair and I didn't even know about it until after surgery. If anything it should make recovery easier because you won't have as much of an issue with gastric reflux as you otherwise may have had. As far as I can tell having this extra area fixed in no way affected recovery. The only difference between a standard sleeve surgery and the added hiatal hernia repair is that you get an extra, very tiny little hole in your stomach below your sternum area. All the doctor does is put the very top part of your stomach back where it is supposed to be so that your diaphragm isn't strangling it anymore. It's really kind of awesome that they fix it all at once because in hindsight, while I didn't even know I had a hiatal hernia, I had started having horrible reflux right before surgery and I haven't experienced it once since.

i knew a had to have a hiatal hernia repair during sleeve surgery. total surgery time sleeve with hernia repair was about 45min to an hr. It is very common for people to have them. as a patient you shouldn't feel anything different its just an extra step for the surgeon. i wouldn't worry about it. you will do great. good luck.

I, too, had a hiatal hernia repair during gastric sleeve surgery. I haven't had one hint of heartburn since then. It's lovely.

Wow that was very quick! I don't no why I thought it was way longer I've heard ppl say their surgery took up to 4 hrs! I've watched videos on YouTube and it looks fairly simple if everything goes as planned!

I had one I didn't know about repaired and it didn't seem to affect anything. I had a quick surgery (less than an hour) and an easy recovery

The only issue I had after my hernia repair was the extraordinary shoulder pain. That lasted a few weeks. Gl!

I too had a repair. I'm not sure what to compare it to since I didn't have a VSg without one. My incision to the left of my belly button was the only pain I had. I read that's where they take out the stomach. Just take it easy and take your pain meds when needed. No heartburn here either but I'm still on the liquid phase. I hope that stays the same when I move onto the pureed phase.

Good luck :)

I heard the shoulder pain was from the gas they use to blow up your abdominal cavity!

I think everyone's experience can be different but I did have some pain after my hiatal hernia repair. But my doctor said mine was one of the worst he had seen. Have some flexible ice packs ready at home. They help so so much. I lived with mine for a week after surgery.

I had a hernia repair also during my sleeve on dec 14 2015. It was pretty awesome...i no longer have acid reflux issues anymore, and you will only have one extra hole right below your rib cage area.

My repair was a surprise....coming out of surgery I was in a ton of pain and I think it was mostly due to hernia. Also had spasms for 2-3 weeks post op and had to take extra meds and had to get extra hydration at drs office once b/c of dehydration issues b/c it hurt so bad to drink anything. I found warm fluids helped....also G2 went down easily. I thought I was never going to feel better....but it all got better...just took time

So do you then have 5 holes or 6 if you have a hernia repaired at the same time?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
