Approved! Pre op diet ?

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I FINALLY got approved! I have been working on getting surgery for about a year and a half, and I can't believe it was approved! I am actually having surgery next Friday. Yikes!

I have been following my surgeons 2 shakes a day and a lean dinner diet, and when I called to ask if I need to change things, they said no. So.....

1. What kind of diet were you on right before surgery?

2. I forgot to ask, but should I continue to take my blood pressure meds and birth control pills?

I'd appreciate any wisdom you have to share!

yes you should keep taking your blood pressure medication. i took mine the night before surgery. they should provide it for you in the hospital. i did pack it just in case. as for birth control i have no idea we have different parts. I would check with surgeon on both just to be on the safe side. pre op diet for me was just low calorie. i didnt have to do liquids.

How long did it take for the insurance to approve you?

Once everything was actually in, it took a week and a 1/2. A couple things had to be resent. I also found out I had a silent heart attack from my EKG and gallstones (no symptoms). I will keep taking my blood pressure meds and call on Monday about the bc pills.< /p>

i took my bp meds the morning of surgery as well. all surgeons have their own variations of preop diets. i did Clear Liquids and veggies for ten days then clear liquids for like 3 days and then typical nothing after midnight the day before. your surgeon will totally prepare you with lots of info!

I'm having surgery next Thursday and my surgeon doesn't have me on any special diet until the day before surgery, which is clear liquids only. Have to stop all NSAIDS (except tylenol), Vitamins and supplements tomorrow. Then only take my alergy and antidepressants/antianxiety meds the day of surgery and hold all others. Funny how different they (surgeons) all are. Do you think it's based more on the individual patient and number/severity of comorbidities or just plain old preference?

Good question, Redemmy. I'm sure that they have to go by each patient to a certain extent. I know that you can't just stop certain meds (like the ones you mentioned). Good luck with your surgery!

the liquid preop is to shrink the liver to make it easier and safer to do the surgery... it also kinda gives you a trial run on liquids so after surgery it is not such a shock to your system to be on them. i hope this head start does all those things for me.. dropped 12 pounds since dec just by cutting down some... premier Protein shakes everyday for Breakfast helps.. i usually skipped that meal... good luck to all..

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
