8 days post-op, no weight loss and I can eat without pain

Hello Everyone,

I am 8 days post-op. The first few days it was a struggle to get all the required fluids in. However, I haven't had any problems holding fluids down. I can take pretty good sips and sometimes gulps of fluids/protein shakes in at a time. For the first time today I tried puréed Beans and had no problems! I haven't lost any weight since the day of surgery though...Should I be concerned??

I was healthy prior to surgery. No health conditions besides Pcos and I'm post menopausal due to a hysterectomy when I was 18. I'm now 30. Im 5'7, Weighed 254 initially, lost 14lbs on pre-op diet and weighed 238 the day of surgery. I'm now 237lbs.

I've heard others complain about the pain when eating/drinking and getting full fast. I have not experienced this at all. I simply eat until satisfied and I've never been able to tell how small my pouch really is. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Yes, I know that. I was advised to try a small amount to see if I could tolerate them. I know that everyone heals differently and can progress through diet phases faster than some. I'm just wondering if something was done wrong with my surgery as to the reason why I'm able to do such things or is it because I'm just one of those lucky ones who heals pretty fast etc.

At that stage the only side affect of surgery was fatigue. I didn't feel like I had surgery otherwise. After a month or so reality kicked in and I had difficulty transitioning to puréed and solids. Be grateful your first few weeks aren't so bad and follow your plan. I'm 6 months out now and my life has been radically changed for the better and I'm almost down 80lbs.

Roughly how much can you eat? If you are being filled up by liquids then that definitely shows your pouch is ok, as prior to this we have been eating larger solid foods to drink liquids and be full that should suggest everything is ok. The only difference is how many times you are eating throughout the day. For instance, my Protein intake I presume is low because I would be full and I tend to stay up most nights as a student. Yesterday I had: glass of apple juice in the afternoon, Protein shake in the evening and a yoghurt later on.

I feel like I am undergoing a speedy recovery: had surgery 9 days ago, completely off pain meds, I don't really experience pain anymore only if I maybe try to lift something it's a reminder but apart from that I feel okay.

In regards to food, I have a broth with very tiny noodles in it and I have chewed them to see what my toleration is and it went down. I haven't thrown up or had any nauseous feelings due to fullness but I can tell when I've had enough, cause prior to surgery I would keep going but something says DONT DO IT! With the weight loss, what is your daily intake of foods? And how are your bowel movements as you may be constipated?

Thanks for the response. I'm 9 days post op today. And it sounds to me like we share some of the same experiences. I can get down a little more than 2-16.9floz Water bottles a day. I'm drinking two Protein shakes a day (30g of protein each) and sometimes I'm full sometimes I'm not. I eat broths and I'm starting to make them a little thicker-no noodles. I haven't had any nausea and the smell of certain things doesn't bother me at all. Just fatigue, feeling light headed at times and a little shakey (first thing in morning usually). I know that's because of my sugar level being low more than likely. I've had bowels-4this week. I do have gas trapped in me still though. I have a follow up appointment today. Just weighed myself and I'm down 2lbs less than I was yesterday!

Thanks for the reply! Well maybe I'm feeling like you were initially. In that case, I am grateful. The reality of it hasn't really kicked for me yet. I'm almost afraid and yet still excited to see what the next couple of months will be like for me! Congrats on your weight loss and blessings as you continue on your journey!

No problem! You are taking in a good amount of Protein and I would say just take it easy you did lose quite a bit in your pre-op so expect to be sure the rest will follow. And I agree that we may have a tougher time when it comes to switching from soft foods to solid foods - but I'm praying we don't! Lol. So funny how parallel our lives are I had an apt today top which I had to reschedule :) Good luck with it and keep us updated.

Hi there . I am 11 days post op . I'm on liquids as well but two days ago I forgot I had surgery and ate a handful of popcorn at the movies . I thought I would get sick or something would happen. It didn't . I felt fine. Yesterday I was curious so I had a Swedish fish. I thought I'd get dumping syndrome . I didn't. Here is what I've learned and decided. The liquid diet is partly for my physical healing and partly for my psychological transition back to food. Just because I can do it doesn't mean I should. People like us .. Who can eat most things , are going to have to fight harder to avoid old habits. I LOVE Swedish fish and it is dangerous for me to know i won't dump from eating them. But then again overeating on sweets is how I got to being obese in the first place soo I cannot allow myself any until I am at goal . Just simple as that . I've loss 13lbs in 11 days . I will be on liquids for 1 more week. Also I bought Protein chicken Soup and I add Protein Powder to everything . The protein is really key to weight loss, from what I've read. Finally I think the strict doctors diet is to help us lose as much weight as possible. So even though I can eat more things now, I won't . It would be a very slippery slope for me

Hi! Thanks for the reply! I totally understand what you are saying. You're brave though-I must say. I'm too scared to even try and swallow certain things out of fear for dumping even though I haven't dumped. For example, if I just want to chew on something with texture that I know I shouldn't be eating I'll chew it and spit it out. I told my doctor about my feeling like I'm able to move onto different phases and my ability to tolerate certain things and he reiterated that the liquid phase is important for healing. So, I will continue it as well for another week. When you ate those things did you feel them moving through your digestive system slightly? Does your stomach make noise? That's about the only thing thats happened to me when I ate something other than liquids.

I just had my apt today and expressed my high toleration. I started my puréed phase yesterday and expressed my high tolerance. A lot of responses show your body telling you you're done with food but somehow I feel as though I'm telling myself. Nonetheless I have only eaten fish and sweet potato, this morning had cerelac (baby's porridge) and was full after 5 mouthfuls. I am still scared tho to even attempt to try anything as appealing as it looks puréed foods slide down but anything else looks like it will get stuck! I have dropped 7kg and can only see how it goes. But definitely feel afraid of the high tolerance but the right foods and just Protein over everything! How are you both feeling?

Eating solid foods early can actually do something to your system if you eat them early, when later on when you can eat anything, you might not be as to tolerate it anymore. Just advice, keep following by the diets all the way through

I talked to my doctor about it also at my follow up appointment. I've decided I'm just going to take it slowly and continue liquids for my own healing; however, I will start having Greek yogurt. I'm down 3lbs so it's slowly coming off! Which I prefer it to come off slowly. Besides that, I'm feeling ok. Still struggling with Water intake and I know I'm dehydrated. I get weak and my back hurts. Started back working today, so hopefully I can get into a routine and find balance!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
