Okay so yesterday i posted about wanting to get WLS . Some suggested researching and reading about it . Well i started doing that today and i read alot about tooth decay after WLS. I was wondering if anybody can share some experiences or some knowledge on the subject. It kind of freaked me out.

This is a great topic @@jessicasantana28 Thank you for bringing this up! It is so important to take your Vitamins as prescribed by your doctors, and to have excellent home care, for the simple reason of not getting the nutrients you are used to getting prior to the surgery. Especially if you have RNY. I know people in real life who refused to take Vitamins, because "they taste yucky". We are adults. Tough it out. Its a Vitamin, people!! Those friends are wearing dentures now. Others have loose teeth and are preparing for the extractions and dentures. VITAMINS!!! and HOME CARE!!! Again...Thank you for bringing light on this subject.

I was concerned about this as well so I asked my surgeon. He said as long as Vitamin levels are kept where they are supposed to be, there should not be any issues. I do know someone personally who had problems with their teeth after bypass but whose to say it wasn't rule he didn't follow like he should have.

I would make sure to get regular dental checkups.

This is all about Vitamins and getting your blood work done per the plan. I wa surprised when my surgeon shared with me that more than half of WLS patients really stop taking Vitamins and getting lab work done after the first year or two.numbers in recent years have improved some but it is part of the reason that bypass has gotten such a bad reputation years ago.

These are the same people who end up with horrible complications and blame it on the surgeries they have had. Of course many stop following the rules, begin grazing and also gain their weight back.

My advice is this: if you are not prepared to change your life and follow through for life, DO NOT consider weight loss surgery. It won't do you any good.

@@jessicasantana28 Just be one of the successes...take your Vitamins, get your bloodwork done, follow the rules, and tend to your teeth by having cleanings and exams twice a year (at least)....and of course great homecare. I applaud you for speaking up, and bringing this to light. I wish more people "got" it.

I am 32 months post op and have noticed no problems with my teeth. I am 67 years old and have all my teeth except for the wisdom teeth that I had removed when I was young and one other tooth.

I follow the rules for the WLS including Protein and Vitamins and I periodically have my teeth cleaned. So in general, I don't think this is a serious problem.

I met one person at a Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting who had a problem with her teeth. But she had a host of problems. She was unable to eat or drink more than a thimble size meal and I felt she had an abnormal surgery and the problems were not corrected post-op. She only attended one meeting so I couldn't see if she ever had the issues resolved and what drove it.

No probs here, but glad to see the topic raised.

I'm 70, have all my teeth except wisdom ones, brush twice a day, have 2 cleanings a year, take all my supplements and meds, and my first annual blood panel came back perfect. Am 1.5 years post-op.

Non-compliance and poor self-care are surely the greatest causes of WLS-related problems. And that includes assuming all is going well without continuing one's post-op follow-ups.

You will do great because you are preparing yourself by researching and getting a better understanding of potential complications. Complications do happen for some people but if you do everything you are supposed to, you mitigate most of that happening.

The best of luck to you!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
