Hi,

im Glad to found this forum and i hope i can ask some questions.

My Name is Michael, im 26 and from Munich, Germany. Im thinking of Doing the Surgery in june in Mexico.

In germany its almost impossible to get the surgery paid from the Insurance, if u do it Here it costs roughly around 12000 Dollar.

Of course u can do a Operation outside Germany, especially in the East European Countries for around the Same Price than in mexico. But u can almost find no Reviews about that and that kinda turns me Off compared to the dozens of Reviews about mexico.

Travelling isnt an issue for me, as i work for Lufthansa and im able to fly very cheap to LAX Directly from munich.

My questions are if anyone from Europe is Here or you know someone who did the Surgery in mx? Its always weird to do a Surgery anywhere Else then in your home Country, but Doing it 10000 km away from home is Even more nervewrecking :D.

I did a lot of Research the Last Weeks on this Site, and almost decided to Choose einher dr. A or Dr. Ortiz

I just hope You can give me some hints :). Sorry if my englisch isnt the best....

Regards, Michael

Welcome! Congratulations on your decision to have surgery!

Although I have not personally had surgery in Mexico a lot of people on these boards have and are happy to answer any and all questions.

Lufthansa is a fabulous airline !

I have had surgery in Mexico twice. I live in New York State. It can be a little daunting if you don't do your research and aren't well prepared, but if you read the experiences of a lot of other MX patients, you will see that it all goes pretty smoothly. These surgeon's programs are all set up to accommodate international patients and they deal with that every single day. So they have things running like a well oiled machine. It sounds like you would fly into LAX and from there you would probably fly down to San Diego. Whichever surgeon or Medical Tourism company you go with will then have a shuttle waiting for you at the San Diego airport. The shuttle will drive you across the border to your hotel or directly to the clinic/hospital where your surgery will be performed. They will get you all the information you need, get you where you need to be, get you your medication, and take care of you in any way necessary, so there aren't many logistics for you to deal with yourself, beyond getting to San Diego.

I didn't use either of the surgeons you are considering, so I can't offer you any personal advice there. Just make sure you thoroughly research the surgeon, the facilities where the surgery will take place, the hotel or recovery house you will be staying in, and ask their offices any and all questions you have ahead of time. Do NOT hesitate to ask questions! All of these surgeons have people on staff whose only job it is to answer your questions, help you with your plans, and make the experience as smooth as possibly for you, so take advantage of that service!

Ask the nice doctor about the patient he ignored for over a month until she finally had to get his attention by posting on this site. Instead of addressing their issues he went on his Facebook page and had all of them defend him. Aftercare was my issue my friend's issue and this person's issue.

What do you mean by that?

You'll find all kinds of things if you poke around on this site. I'm not saying the surgeons don't know what they're doing because they do. But it's a nasty little trend that they run as many people as possible through and after your surgery the give you no instructions no return calls by the doctor and you, my friend, are on your own.

There is a forum member who lives in Amsterdam who might have some good ideas. I am currently in Mexico recovering from plastics so I am definitely a supporter of this option, but it's worth checking closer to home too!

Right now I can't think of her screen name ... but she posts regularly and has been sleeved several years. Good luck!

BTW, I was banded in Frankfurt when I lived near Munich. I returned to the states and had a very difficult time getting follow on support. Bands can be high maintenance but it was definitely a failure factor for me.

I revised to sleeve 4 years ago locally and still rely on my surgeon's office as they are really great. Sleeves are much less prone to needing maintenance than bands tho.

Good luck!

Hi Michael,

I just returned from having my surgery done in Tijuana by Dr. Carlos Altamirano Cano. I have to say that it was absolutely the very best medical experience I've ever had. BP staff was great, the recovery house was fine, but my Surgeon, he is a GOD. I would trust Dr. Altamirano with my life any time, any day. Choose him and you'll be in great hands.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
