Insulin and Weight loss surgery

Recommended Posts

I had RNY surgery in November 2015. Since then then I have lost 43 lbs I. am a diabetic and my insulin type has been changed to another brand.

I have not lost any weight in the month since this change took place. Has anyone else experienced this. Does anyone know if taking insulin stops or slows down weight loss. Thanks

Good question? My insulin intake is being tweeked since having gastric bypass. My endocrinologist is talking about changing my insulin to something else. I'll be sure to keep you posted If I notice a change in my weight loss or stall progress.

A lot of questions come into mind when answering this:

  • How has your appetite changed since changed insulin?
  • Are your listed numbers accurate (45lbs lost since 1999)?
  • Are you exercising? How often?
  • Are you still tracking your portions?
  • Are you intaking more carbs?
  • What insulin did you switch to?
  • How often are you taking insulin?

As a clinician I have seen many people talk about how insulin (and other meds) make them gain weight. Physiologically this is inaccurate as these hormones and medicines have no calories. What is changing is the hormones and signaling in the body. As insulin levels drop hunger levels rise. This is further complicated by patients who take shots multiple times a day as satiety is affected by insulin and blood sugar levels.

Mainly....have you brought this up with your endocrinologist and surgical team? The biggest advantage you can give yourself is good communication with your providers.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
