How do teachers do when they return?

Recommended Posts

As my sleeve gets closer I am excited but nervous. My principal is very aware of my surgery and is super supportive. I am doing my surgery on Thursday before Spring Break. I know I will not be quite ready to go back on Monday after Spring Break but I am wondering if I should plan on the whole two weeks? I teach 2nd grade and my classroom is active. Any teachers out there who can give me thoughts and tell me what they did?

Thanks in advance.

I teach 7th grade. I had preop on Monday, and Tuesday surgery (12/8). I hopes to go back to work on that next Monday, as a colleague returned after 4 days. Wow! However, the not from my doc said I could not return for 8 days, so that was 12/16. I took 7 work days off, came back for three days and then was off for winter break. The three days were manageable, but I won't say they were fun or even good. I was droopy. My advice would be take Monday and Tuesday off at least, make the time you go back short, like a trial run.

Gah. 12-8 . stoopid emoticons.

I'm scheduled for February 3rd. I'm a first grade teacher and I've spoken to my principal about needing 2-4 weeks off. Im hoping for the least amount of time away from my kiddos but also want to make sure that I take care of me. Also...my principal has been really great and said that if I want to come back at first for a few half days to feel it out that I can do that.

This is what I like to hear. For as much as our profession is locked into so few personal and sick days per year, when push comes to shove, the people at school will circle around you like a family should.

I was going to take just a week (2/9 surgery date) however, after reading several posts I have decided to take two weeks. Even if I quickly heal, I'm going to need to get used to getting liquids in and lifestyle changes. I teach 8th grade and I'm relying on my fellow science teachers to help me out. Also helps that I have a good capable sub. Don't be afraid to ask for help and to lean on others. Just because you are used to doing it on your own does not mean you have to. ???? good luck! Take care of you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
