It's been 3 weeks since surgery and I am having real food for the first time in a month! I grilled a piece of salmon and am 4 tiny bites in and think I might actually be full. I'm not sure though. I'm so used to eating so much that I'm miserable and clearly full, but not sure how to know if I'm full. Any advice?

Do not push it hard at all is my best advice.......certainly at only 3 weeks.

That's mighty early.

The key for me is to eat with my eyes first.......portion out the amount that looks appropriate for my stage.

Eat that much and that much only.

If I eat more.......to the point of actually being full.........then I will be miserable for an hour afterwards. It isn't a feeling I enjoy so it makes it easy to portion out the food before I take the first bite.

Well, I was okay, but woke up a bit ago extremely nauseous and feel like I'm either going to puke or have the poos. I'm miserable. Maybe fish was not the best thing to have 1st. Now I am scared to eat solids ????

What would be better and milder to try? Fish was on the list, but clearly I shouldn't have eaten that...I hate feeling like I'm going to throw up ????????

I'm almost 4 weeks and was just cleared today for normal foods! so excited to go grocery shopping! haha

I think portioning before hand is the best way to go...my brain doesn't get yet that I have a frankentummy that can't eat as much any more!

I think you had a bad reaction to the fish possibly because you grilled, and didn't bake. I got pre marinated tilapia, and bake it covered so the juices stayed in the fish. That way, when I ate it - it was very soft and very most. I had a really easy time on my tummy and it was the 2nd solid food I've eating since surgery. Also, I cut the portion in half, before even putting it on my plate, and shared a few bites with my baby girls so I would only eat 2oz. My problem has always been Portion Control and fast eating. I tried tuna and light mayo also, and that was a little too hard for me, but I was able to get almost half a can down and I didn't feel sick afterwards, it was just more uncomfortable going down than the baked fish.

I actually didn't grill it. I pan seared it, but it was super dry. I called my dietician today and she said to make sure all of the food I eat is moist and easy to chew/swallow. I haven't eaten anything today except my Protein shakes, but am going to give it a try in the morning with some Egg Beaters or maybe a little bit of all natural applesauce. I never thought I'd see the day that I was scared of food. lol

Quick question...did you experience any 'popping" sensation internally around the area that they pulled your stomach out? I tried to go to the grocery store today to get a few things and leaned forward in my car and felt like someone stabbed me in that area. It wasn't a pulling sensation, but more of a deep sharp pain. I've been hurting ever since and even had to take some of the pain medication a couple of times. I can't lean over forward fully and the only thing that is comfortable is lying down or barely moving...Been a rough couple of days. :(

I ate salmon every early on and had the same experience. Try a flakey white fish instead and put salmon off for a few months, I can eat it fine now!

As for when are you full--don't think about being full. Think about being not hungry anymore or satisfied. Full isn't a good thing at this point (or maybe even ever again!). Eat to the point of satiety, not fullness.

It might also help to measure your meals.

Start with about 4 tablespoons of food. Eat that for a few meals or days and if it seems enough stay with that, or gradually increase to 1/4 c or eventually 1/2 cup until you get a feel for what satisfied feels like just eat what you measure.

Yes! I have experienced the sharp stabbing pains near my incisions. Usually when I am bent forward or laying on my side. The pain usually passes pretty quickly, so I just put pressure on the area, and it goes away. Some days I feel almost normal, and then there are days where it feels like I've just gotten the beating of a lifetime. Pretty soon though, we'll be feeling more good days than bad. At least that's what I'm hoping for!! Lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
