Side Dish Help

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I've got a pretty good grasp on Proteins during stage 3. My question is: what side dishes are you fabulous folks making to supplement your meal(s)?

Zucchini or Cauliflower most of the time. really didn't get to the point to having room for them until almost 3 months out though.

For lunch I rotate between artichoke hearts (frozen, not the ones in a jar coated in oil), green Beans, and grilled asparagus. I keep it super-simple with just light Salad Dressing or a bit of grass-fed butter to dress them.

For dinner, I rotate between brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower. I roast them in the oven with olive oil spray and some herbs & spices. I also add some chopped dark leafy greens or avocado to tuna, salmon, or sardine salad.< /p>

Broccoli (steamed) is a frequent one for me. It's almost always the side I order if I'm out at a restaurant.

Greens like collards are a favorite, too.

Occasionally I'll have refried Beans or other types of Beans.< /p>

I'm all about the entree, though......the meat.

One of my go to's is green Beans. Starting with my soft phase I often add green beans to my meal. I like the single serve green beans but my absolute favorite are green beans from Lee's chicken. I often keep a large in my fridge and add one or two tablespoons to my meal. Easy.

I enjoy turnips and carrots mashed or pureed together with a little artificial sweetener added. They freeze very well and you can simply scoop out a spoon full at a time and warm it. For some reason early on this mix settled better in the tummy than many other veggies.

I definitely underutilize avocado.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
