Burst blood vessel after op

Recommended Posts

Hi I had my op 14/1. My procedure was one of the easiest my surgeon ever had. My liver was in great condition.

After the op in the evening I had overwhelming nausea. The nurse kept changing my nausea meds over to make me feel better.

All I wanted to do was vomit.

In her good intentions the nurse said try not to vomit as it wasn't good for my newly bypassed stomach.

About 3am I couldn't stop the overwhelming feeling, and then finally it happened, I vomited blood and lots of it, I'm not sure how much it was because I felt so unwell , but I do remember reaching for a cup and I know I filled at least half of it.

Next thing my room was filled with nurses, they soon realised I was incredibly pale. My surgeon was notified and by 5am I was having surgery/endoscopy to repair the broken blood vessel.

The next day I had several blood transfusions.

I came home yesterday. My beautiful husband is looking after me well.

My surgeon does not foresee any future problems because of the complication.

I just feel quite weak now and have to work on rebuilding my stamina.

Has anyone else experienced this complication?

Scary! I was lucky enough not to have any of these complications, but this is a good reminder that things certainly can and do happen. I hope you feel better soon, and it's good that you have someone taking good care of you. Take it easy! :)

I'm providing an update for anyone who may come across this later.

I know pre-op I researched to my fingers were numb!

I'm 3 days home now, and I'm feeling better already. I'm certainly not back to normal activity but my energy is slowly creeping back, and I'm feeling positive again about my decision to have the bypass.

I have hardly any pain, and I have not taken pain medication for 2 days.

I'm getting used to my new stomach and how much I can eat on the liquid stage, but it's going well.

Best of all I've lost 10 pounds in 6 days post surgery!

That's great news on the update! Like any other surgery GB has it's risks and surgeons are human which occasionally make mistakes. Best of luck on the continued improvement and your future success!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
