I'm about to have sleeve surgery, but my surgeon wants me to have gastric bypass, as he is concerned that my mild reflux will get worse after the sleeve, I am currently taking nexium 20mg. Has anyone faced this problem before. Please advise, as I don't want to the bypass it looks daunting.

My sleeve surgeon decided I was ok because I can relate my heartburn to certain foods I eat. So I'm working on controlling mine with diet. Maybe you could check into that.

My heartburn is starting to get bad and I am eight weeks out. I am getting a burning sensation on the left side of my chest, and I am taking 40 mg of Nexium twice a day. I am really worried now!

I heard from a friend who had reflux and was taking nexium before she did the sleeve, and she still is taking it ,but its the food you eat that can help with the reflux.

I had very mild rare heartburn prior to surgery. My surgeon even did a test to check for a hiatal hernia and it was negative. He felt that the sleeve would be fine for me. Post op I began to develop heartburn and reflux. It is manageable with medication and I don't eat approximately two hours before bed and that seems to work for me.

I think if I had suffered with heartburn prior to my sleeve I would have chosen the bypass.

I had some mild reflux before that was well controlled with Omeprazole, I still take it after but he just upped my dose a little bit. I'm almost 4 weeks out and havent' had any issues.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
