Pregnancy After RNY vs Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am doing some research prior to WLS. I went into my consultation thinking that RNY was the best surgery for me. My doctor did not have anything positive to say about it for someone my age and eagerness to have a family. I will be 29 next month and have no children. She stated that with the RYN, it would be very difficult to provide enough nutrients to have viable pregnancies. She also mentioned lifelong nutrient deficiencies. She stated that most women that had a Sleeve have much easier pregnancies. Has anyone had a doctor okay RNY at a young age and do you regret the more extreme surgery? Thanks in advance!

Whoops! I accidentally put this in the main forum. It's been moved over to the Pregnancy forum. I can't figure out how to delete it though. ???? ????

That's strange. My surgeon literally said the opposite. I'm 27 and am hoping that an added bonus to becoming healthier is finally having thr ability to conceive. Thanks to PCOS, the last 7 years we've been trying...we had ZERO luck. He was very confident in my chances after WLS and when I asked about the safety, he was not concerned at all. Like everything else, how well I do is based on how well I choose to do. Like with losing weight, I have full control over how successful I will be. And with getting/being pregnant, it will be up to me to make sure I continue to eat healthy and put the right nutrients in my body to ensure a healthy baby.

It's crazy to see the difference in the way surgeon's practice across the US alone..

And I was going to say there are many people on this forum and others who have had zero problems getting pregnant. I hate to say this but your doctor is wrong. Having the sleeve will not make getting pregnant any easier.

I've heard of several ppl having successful pregnancies after either, and my surgeon said to wait at least 18 months after the procedure due to your body still likely being in the weight lost mode and it would be rough on a pregnancy to ensure that you are receiving the nutrients necessary prior to that. I have a personal friend who is pregnant a year after her surgery, she is 30 weeks along right now and both baby and her are healthy. She's had no issues except the usual first child fears.

Well I'm not sure if I am the norm but I got pregnant five months after my Roux-en-Y procedure and had a very healthy 8 pounds 8 ounce girl and then I did it again the next year LOL 2, perfect, healthy daughters in 25 months. I did however have to get Iron transfusions. I gained about 6 pounds.

I asked this same question of my surgeon and my OB/GYN. They both said either surgery would be fine and honestly, getting the weight off would be the most important factor for conceiving and having a safe pregnancy and delivery.

My sister had the rny and she got pregnant 2 years after surgery. She never would of had kids without it. Kinda sounds like that doctor isn't to educated on this surgery. This is extremely important to me as well, I have had 3 kids, 1 who has passed away after birth, but I plan to have more after I heal and lose my weight from surgery. Breastfeeding is also something I'm very passionate abouqd t4 and I was told by my surgeon that that shouldn't be a problem at all. Just take my Vitamins and drink lots of water.Good luck to you and I hope you have a safepregnancy in the future! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
