Headache after surgery

Recommended Posts

Had RNY on January 12 and have been fighting a cluster headache ever since. I have meds that take the edge off but it never completely goes away. I'm trying to stay hydrated. Just wondering if anyone else had headaches to deal with after surgery?

One of the requirements for RNY surgery was to give up caffeine and carbonated beverages. I went cold turkey when I began my 6 month medically supervised weight loss and exercise program. I suffered through a week of severe withdrawal syndrome one I went off the caffeine. This withdrawal symptoms included severe headaches and body aches.

If I had waited until just before surgery to do this, the effects would have been compounded with the after effects of the surgery making it a double whammy.

In addition to what James mentioned dehydration can really cause severe headaches. Also pain meds believe it or not.

Pain meds, the antibiotics, the anti blood clot injections all contributed to my headache.I had the same thing.I was so desperate I absorbed 2 tylenol in a small bit of Water and drank it.

Ween off the pain meds.

If you have not detoxed from caffeine prior then oh boy...

Ah, never even thought of caffeine withdrawal!

That was a major reason I weaned myself off of caffeine and carbonation gradually well before surgery. I didn't want to go through caffeine withdrawal after surgery.

I know right after surgery it is hard to get in your fluids, but keep sipping. Staying hydrated will help.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
