Coffee hates me

Recommended Posts

Oh coffee, what a fickle lover you are.

Couple of years ago, my doctor made me quit caffeine. Apparently I was drinking so much of it that it was affecting my heart rhythm.

So I enjoyed my Decaf, with one (allowed) cup of regular per day. sugar-free hazelnut Creamer, always.

When I was allowed to have the creamer again, after surgery. I eagerly had my first cup. Meh. It just wasn't the same. I was so looking forward to it, but... meh.

So I waited. I tried it again. Flavor better, more what I remembered. But oh, what's this? Instant laxative, run to the bathroom!

I'm five months out now. AND IT HAS NOT CHANGED! I cannot drink it anywhere but in my house, and then only if I'm constipated, because I'll be running to the bathroom.

THIS IS NOT FAIR! NO ONE WARNED ME ABOUT THIS!!!! WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Nothing to be said but pour it into a blender and whip it senseless.

I'd be miserable, as I greatly increased my coffee intake about a year ago.

Is it guaranteed that the coffee is the culprit or might it be the "creamer" that's been affecting you differently since surgery?

It might be the creamer rather than the coffee that may be causing diarrhea. Most Creamers contain a significant amount of sugar or other sweeteners. For RNY patients this can quickly lead to dumping syndrome, I am not sure for sleeve patients.

I had to give up coffee for different reasons (it gave me bad heartburn) and I, too was very sad. I ended up turning to tea. I have about 12 different kinds in my cupboard right now. The closest I found to satisfying that morning coffee craving is Republic of Tea Double chocolate Matte. I brew a double strength cup and add 1/2 and 1/2 and a splash of premier chocolate Protein. Gives it a mocha flavor. You could try it with your hazelnut creamer (unless that's the culprit, of course)

But the good news is once I had my gallbladder removed I can tolerate coffee again, although not in the volumes I once did. However, I still enjoy my teas.

I have this magnet on my refrigerator:

coffee has always made me "go" even before surgery. With or without creamer. Since it just started for you after surgery, it's most likely the creamer. Try a non-dairy creamer. If that doesn't help, try Decaf coffee for a while. Then you'll know what the issue is.

Drink the coffee alone, no creamer

Next day Drink some of your creamer alone, no coffee.< /p>

Compare results to narrow down the cause of your symptoms. Could be either or could be the combo.

That's a crappy situation.

I rely on coffee quite a bit as the low calories sometimes leave me with low energy.

I'm wondering is it's attributed to something else entirely. You have a whole new way of eating now and don't have the same foods in your system to "buffer" against the effects of coffee. Maybe that is the reason for the immediate reaction.

Not being funny, here......but at least you now have a sure fire laxative. That is not something I take lightly after a few months on the low-carb-lifestyle. I appreciate such things.

I was in the grocery store yesterday and noticed they now have a decaf-regular blend....Maxwell House I believe it was. Maybe this will be less intense on your system.

Yeah, I need to make my lazy butt do the experiments to see what it really is. Maybe the next time I have a long weekend - my office is not closed for Martin Luther King day tomorrow.

The hazelnut creamer is non-dairy, sugar-free.

The coffee is Decaf.< /p>

I don't have my gallbladder, had it out around 20 years ago.

@@Dub I totally thought of you and your runs for coffee (no pun intended! hah!)

Was out with my Dad yesterday.

On the way back to the house he said he wanted coffee.....I zipped through the Dunkin' drive through to get his.......then never even had to take it out of 1st gear to roll through the adjacent Starbuck's drive through for my hot dark roast.

Gotta love my town's "coffee corner". coffee runs have now replaced beer runs, I guess.

I recently moved to Boston where there are about twice the Dunkin Donuts as Starbucks, and I've always been a Starbucks girl. However it seems like a cardinal sin around here to not be a DD loyalist. :-)

To the OP: maybe try a new brand or variety of coffee. Sometimes the Beans used at Starbucks give me Migraines, so I've learned to stick with the light roasts. Maybe you're more sensitive to a kind of bean now.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
