Protein hot chocolate

Recommended Posts

I live in Idaho and it's frickin cold, especially now that I have no insulation. Besides coffee and tea, I love hot cocoa to help keep warm. But unfortunately all "bariatric" hot cocoa products I've found 1) have artificial sweeteners (which I hate) and 2) contain Calcium caseinate which is a lower quality, not readily absorbed form of Protein. I much prefer whey isolate. So I came up with my own recipe....

1/2 cup Hershey's cocoa

1/4 cup Stevia in the Raw

2 scoops Syntrax nectar Natural vanilla

1 cup nonfat dry milk

I keep it in a tupperware in my cupboard and Just stir into hot Water to taste. This recipe makes for a slightly under sweetened hot cocoa. I do this on purpose because I usually add Torani Syrup for another flavor twist (almond, peppermint, caramel, Irish cream, hazelnut, etc. ) and this adds a bit more sweetness. If I want a cup of plain hot chocolate I just add a little Extra stevia or Monk Fruit sweetener.

Cozy!

Mmmmm, must try this. We will have a high of -7 F here in MN tomorrow. Hate it!

I make mine similar to that except I just use raw cacao powder and CVS vanilla whey isolate. I also add a dash of cinnamon and a pinch of pink salt. If I want to sweeten it I add a bit of raw honey, but often the Protein powder is enough sweetener for me.

Well this sounds amazing! It will come in handy for chilly winter nights slightly North of Idaho (about 900 miles north!) as well! Thanks for the recipe!

I just ordered my Protein hot chocolate from the BP store. I'm too lazy to make it the way you make it. The prepackaged is really good though, if you haven't already tried it.

I have had it, and yes, it is good. I just wasn't a fan of the artificial sweeteners and casein, that's all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
