first night sleeping

Recommended Posts

ok sleevers, i am two weeks out from surgery. i will be an outpatient procedure and i will spend the night in a hotel a mile or so from the hospital and go back to see the doc again the next morning before heading back home. question for you all who have already been there, did you sleep ok the first night or have to sleep propped up in a chair instead? I have narrowed it down to 2 hotels and one has and oversized chair with ottoman and one does not. the one without the chair is $50 cheaper though. not trying to be cheap but i am already self pay for this so if i don't need it, why pay extra. if it is definitely the way to go then i don't mind paying the extra at all.

ADVISE??? thanks in advance!

You are doing well to get this sorted out now.....beforehand.

I'd had a couple open hernia surgeries in the years prior to me having my sleeve (another hernia repaired during at the same time).

The first two open hernia repairs prepared me for what I may feel like coming home from the hospital after the sleeve-hernia surgery. Those prior recoveries did not find me getting comfortable at all laying flat on my back in bed. You are gong to want to be propped up comfortably for a few nights.

Two weeks prior to my sleeve I bought myself a new recliner, replacing a wing back chair. Best decision ever. Comfort is had and I can't stress how great it was to come home and sit & sleep in that chair for my first 2 weeks post-op.

Go for the recliner is my vote. I'm sure glad I did.

Now that is mainly due to the hernia repair....as my sleeve never bothered me a bit.....and still doesn't.

I wish I had the chair option, and I didn't have the hernia. I'm a side sleeper, but that wasn't an option for the first couple of days, so I was glad for the hospital bed which angled nicely. After day three I was glad to be back in my own bed though.

I didn't sleep in a bed for two weeks. I didn't even sleep in the bed at the hospital. I used the recliner during my hospital stay. Once home I have a recliner but wasn't comfortable in it so I slept in a big comfy chair with an ottoman.

It's up to you but my vote is go with the hotel that has the chair option just in case. You don't want to be miserable if sleeping in a bed doesn't suit you.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery.

I stayed overnight at the hospital and the nurse said I had to sleep at least on all 30degree incline. Once I came home I slept propped up on pillows for a couple days and slowly worked up to sleeping on my side. I'm a tummy sleeper....I'm 3 weeks out and still not really sleeping on my tummy. Good luck!

Also the pain meds helped with sleeping. I didn't feel a ton of discomfort.

thanks all. i have nice reclining options once i get home thankfully and i am truly leaning towards that option for the one night hotel stay as well. i don't think it will be quite as comfy to just prop up with more pillows on the bed. as soon as i can get comfortable in my temperpedic again i will be happy!!! ;)

if anyone else has any opinions then keep them coming!

I was pain free and slept as normal from the first night on. That said, I'd spring the $50 for the comfy chair just in case.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
