New...but need some clarification

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone. My name is Stephanie. I tried losing weight most of my life. I was successful but unfortunately gained more than half, if not more back. I seen the amazing results from my coworkers with having the sleeve procedure done. I went to a seminar last Thursday. The dr office called me yesterday and told me:My insurance covers the lap band, sleeve and gastric bypass. I have to get a psychological evaluation(which is done at the dr office )and meet the weight loss requirements for the surgery. I was also told that my insurance has no wait time. I honestly don't understand what is "no wait time means?". I was told by my coworkers that there is different steps that I have to take for the surgery. My other coworker said that it took her 6 months. But the dr office rep stated that my requirements is the psychological evaluation and weight loss.Im lost. My first appointment is Feb 4th.Is everyone requirements based on an individual level or do everyone basically go through all of the steps such as nutritionist n etc? If i have confused you then im sorry. I think I've confused myself. Lol. Thanks in advance for any comments. Muahh ????

Each insurance plan is different. Some require 3 months of supervised weight loss or education, others 6 months, others none -- it looks like your insurance requires none, hence the "no wait time." Your surgeon will probably require at least some educational appointments before surgery, such as meeting with a dietitian, but it sounds like nothing that can't be taken care of quickly. Looks like you have excellent insurance -- my advice is to be happy and don't look this gift horse in the mouth :)

I thank you so much for the speedy reply and clarification. I truly appreciate it. I recently just signed up for the insurance at my job. I wanted insurance for the dental and preventive measures. I wasn't really considering the sleeve due to me feeling like a failure. But I seen and read a lot of stories. Im encouraged and currently feel blessed. Any WLS is a tool and not an easy way out. From what I seen, its a lifetime commitment. Thanks again for replying. Muahh ????

You are already ahead of the game. It's sad to see how many people have surgery and expect magic with little or no work. It's so important to be realistic and you are. Best wishes to you.

Be sure to check with your insurance yourself and don't rely solely on what your surgeon's office says are your requirements. My office insisted that I needed 6 months of a supervised diet, but when I spoke to my insurance that wasn't the case. I have a fairly standard policy, but my company added a specific set of requirements.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
