Where's the Water? Hunger and thirst are often confused. A half hour or hour after eating you should be drinking a low cal or no cal beverage versus eating.

I know how you feel the hunger is back big time. And no its not thirst or reflux and yes I have all my Protein. The battle is real and I feel your pain! I hope someone has some better advice than the stock replies :)

It is hard not to give 'stock' answers with so little information provided.

Honestly, it would be helpful to know how much you started at, and where you are now, what your goals are, what you are eating and Water volume intake.

"Stock" replies?? Really?

Those people with "stock" replies know what they are talking about. Just because you thought sleeve surgery was going to be this magical thing where all your hunger would go away and you wouldn't actually have to use a little will power once in a while doesn't mean the answers given to you by mostly veterans aren't tried and true. They've been there. They know what works.

So you're hungry? Drink Water, make sure you're eating enough Protein, and eat on a schedule. We don't have a magic wand to make your hunger go away.

Sorry for the stock reply.

I know it is not nearly the same thing, but today I thought I was going to DIE if I didn't get some flipping chocolate. I had chocolate in my desk drawer, but I resisted. Instead I went in the kitchen and got some hot green tea with a Splenda in it and went on....I skipped the candy and went on about my business!!!!!

It's not a stock answer. It's the simple truth. For most of us food will always be a battle. I plan my food each and every day or I will nibble myself to death. I drink Water when I want chocolate. I go for a walk if it gets too bad. This surgery gave me a huge boost, but I still have to work at it every day. Sometimes I have to look at my food log and reflect on what I am eating. Processed carbs will trigger the hunger response in many. Eating food that fill me up but don't satiate is an exercise in frustration. And yes, unless you provide specifics of what a typical food day is like, how you do with your Water and exercise, etc... all you can get is a general answer. No one is trying to be snarky, but a general question can really only be answered with a general response.

Why did you eat the watermelon? Was it something you were feeling emotionally? Physically?

Identify the problem, identify the goal, set a timeline, identify the obstacles to the goal, and how to resolve them.

If the problem is physical hunger, and your goal is to stop snacking, the obstacles might be the Snacks sitting around. How to resolve that might be to eliminate the presence of the Snacks. You might set a timeline of 2 days with no snacks. Plan out all your meals and beverages for those two days. Write down everything you eat and drink. It's only two days, you can do it.

Then after two days, review what happened. Were the obstacles accurate? Did you discover other things that were going on?

No need to be rude Babbs just drives me nuts when people don't accept you can feel hungry and blame it on thirst etc. My surgeon and biological studies says it's totally normal for hunger to return in this time frame body finds away to produce gerhlin with stomach left n the sensation of hunger aka sensation in your stomach is the stmach contracting n rubbing together when it's empty part hormonal driven part mechanical by knowing it's empty. That's in its very simplistic terms. on here though many ppl just parrot the same responses n ignore biology and lay blame at the person. No one on here can take the high road with just 'stop eating n follow your meal plan' as we all needed surgery to fix our over eating issues. If it was so easy blendgirl you shouldn't have had surgery n just stopped eating so much as your helpful advise says.

Sharon1964 I liked your response.

I'm sorry where did I say it was easy? No one is laying blame. Meal planning is in fact a tool I use religiously to combat the urge to over eat.

One thing I have learned through this whole process (surgery, pre-op diet, liquid phases, etc.) is that whether I think I am hungry or really HUNGRY, it won't kill me to wait until my next planned snack or meal.

I eat frequently in order to get my 100 grams of Protein so there is ALWAYS a meal or snack on the horizon. Drinking Water or making some tea or refreshing my Mio bottle will usually do the trick.

If all else fails then it won't be the end of the world if I eat a small Protein snack. Even a piece of fresh fruit occasionally is not the end of the world.

The red flag is when your head is telling you to eat, eat, eat, even though you aren't physically hungry. For me that is a signal that something else is going on -- not hunger.

If you don't have a counselor or therapist already, I suggest you consider finding one. A good book written by a therapist who works with WLS patients is called EAT IT UP! I found it really helpful.

I credit all of the years of therapy and working with my food addiction for helping me through this whole process. The help has been invaluable.

I do get REALLY hungry and the hunger pains are worse than before surgery. I'm taking Prilosec, I'm constantly drinking, so it's not acid or thirst. I keep super low calorie Snacks around for when the hunger strikes in between meals. Pepper slices, sugar free Popsicles, cucumber.. Something just to make the hunger diminish but still healthy so I don't fall in to old habits.

Those Snacks sound ok but none have Protein.

How are you doing getting in all of your Protein? If you aren't getting enough protein you will be hungry.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
