No appetite 8 weeks after surgery

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon. I am 8 weeks post op and I am not eating or drinking the recommended Protein. I have absolutely no appetite and my surgeon said sometimes it's normal and takes some a little longer to get their appetite. I have no energy so it's hard for me to work. Is their anyone in here that have gone through the same thing and have any suggestions on what to do. Thanks in advance.

I'm not quite as far along as you, but I don't have an appetite either, and I don't expect I'll have one for quite some time. I have set reminders on my phone to alert me when I need to eat, drink, and take supplements. I make sure to eat what I've planned, not necessarily the full serving amount, but until I recognize that I'm full. I've tried a variety of Protein supplements to keep from getting bored - right now I'm using the hot chocolate from the Bariatric Pal Store, Isopure, Proti-15 drink, and Premier Protein chocolate ready to drink. Basically I look at eating and drinking as a prescription from my doctor that I have to take as scheduled or I'll face some dire consequences.

I am 10 months post op, and still don't have an appetite. Celebrate this, but make yourself get the Protein in. Your body needs the Protien, and try to follow your doctor's orders on how often to eat. Do you feel full after eating small amounts?

No I dont. I hardly eat anything. I'm hearing people say get this in and make sure you are drinking that but it's so easier said then done. I'm def gonna try though.

my hunger returned after about five months. There are a few people (I consider them lucky, actually), who never get it back. It's much easier to stick to the plan when you're never hungry!!

Same, I never feel hungry or like I want to eat, I plan out how to get my protien each day

I am 2 1/2 months out and have no appetite at all. I have literally forgotten to eat all day on several occasions. It's hard. You really just need to tell yourself that this is what you have to do when I get up in the morning I make a Protein shake...usually like a Syntrax Nectar and I'll fill it with ice and sip it off and on all morning. Then at lunch time, since I'm still not hungry, I might nibble a piece of string cheese or a baby bell or sometimes nothing at all. Then at dinner time I try to force myself to eat even though I'm not hungry and sometimes I just can't. It's just miserable to even be there at the table, so I'll make another Protein Shake and sip it over the next couple of hours. It helps me get close to my minimum without feeling like I'm being forced to eat against my will.

I set my Fitbit to give an alarm when it's time for me to eat something.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
