JamieLogical 8,713 Posted January 13, 2016 @@lauraellen80 Ultimately everyone is going to have to figure out what works for them long term. Guidelines from surgeons and nutritionists are all well and good, but only YOU have to live the rest of your life. I do think establishing a good foundation early on by sticking to the guidelines is critical for success, but over time we all have to find our own way. Sounds like what you are doing is working for YOU and that's all the matters!
neva77 8 Posted January 13, 2016 Lettuce does offer some nutrients. This food is low in Saturated Fat and Sodium, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Folate, Iron, Potassium and Manganese. Agreed. Especially if it's not iceberg. I have to be honest, I get a little tired around here of hearing people dismiss lettuce (and other leafy vegetables) as a useless waste of space and acting like it's some kind of junk food. I eat salads pretty regularly (I'm 7 months out), though now I load them with Protein, and I usually go for ones made with mixed greens and spinach. I guess I could eat nothing at all but Protein like some people claim to do, but I would prefer to be able to have regular bowel movements. I'm just silly like that, I guess. I don't eat lettuce and I have a BM every day.... Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I have trouble with any raw veg8oiiietables post-op. I am 16 months out and they still cause me to have super uncomfortable gas and burping. Cooked veggies I can handle just fine. Having BM is not problem for me, but lettuce does not offer enough to me to have the pain that it brings on. Everyone is different and our bodies know what we need and can handle. I was just curious as to how others tolerated it...

Of course if it causes pain to you, it is not worth eating!

I think we all have them days I love lettuce, I love salads, so I'm kinda sad that I can't have a nice big salad
Ronjohn 84 Posted January 14, 2016 I'm sad I can't have a little salad... lol I'm three weeks post op and I have been told by my NUT that I can attempt it at 4 weeks and see how it goes. Looking at the portions I'm eating now I could eat the veggies off a burger and call that a salad. I do find it hard to get veggies and fruit in by the time I eat Protein and drink all that Water. I usually just eat a cooked veggie as a snack during the day. Trying to eat it with Protein is a joke as I never have room. I find my self setting times constantly to remind me to eat, drink, take Vitamins, Calcium, etc. I don't think I was totally prepared for how small my stomach was going to be. I'm not hungry, but man I feel like I am eating like a bird.
lauraellen80 855 Posted January 14, 2016 @@Ronjohn you are really early out of surgery--the way you can eat now is no indication of what things will be like in the future. Your sleeved stomach is still swollen and healing, so give it time! It gets much easier. Right now, just focus on Water, Protein, and taking your Vitamins. wannaBthinsoon 1,634 Posted January 14, 2016 9 months out, and I can't do lettuce. I just cant seem to be able to chew it small enough. It fills me up WAY too fast!
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted January 14, 2016 It depends on you body. I had no issues with lettuce and still don't. However Before surgery I probably had lettuce or some other raw veg every day. If you can't eat it now, give it time. Try it again in another 3 mths and see how things work out for you.

Alex Brecher 10,515 Posted January 17, 2016 Lettuce is one of the more difficult foods to digest. It’s a bit of a shame because salads are definitely easy to make and low calorie and super healthy! At just three months post-op, I don’t think it’s time to worry yet! By the time you can eat lettuce, at least you’re really appreciate it!

Kristin7676 32 Posted January 18, 2016 I am only 3 weeks out so I am not any where near ready to even think about lettuce. I was just wondering if people have the same issues with brussell sprouts? They are one of my fave veggies.
WalkOnWaking 139 Posted January 18, 2016 I was told broccoli, asparagus, lettuces, and Brussels sprouts were off my list for a year. Something about the texture being too rough even when cooked. But every surgeon has their own rules it seems.
Ronjohn 84 Posted January 18, 2016 I was told broccoli, asparagus, lettuces, and Brussels sprouts were off my list for a year. Something about the texture being too rough even when cooked. But every surgeon has their own rules it seems. Wow, a year out? That seems a little excessive. I guess my surgeon is pretty progressive, as I was having over cooked broccoli two weeks out with no issues. He told me at my two week post op visit that he try's to get patient eating "food" sooner, so your stomach muscles can get back into shape. He said that staying Protein shakes for extend periods prevents for the stomach muscles from getting back in shape, so you can start eating "real" food again. WalkOnWaking 139 Posted January 18, 2016 I am free to eat anything else as of 5 weeks out, except the above veggies and raw nuts. Every surgeon has their own way and to me it's not very restrictive. I was on liquids 2 weeks post-op. Soft foods as tolorate thru week 4. Then week 5 no restrictions other than above. I am ok with following his requirements.
