Need help getting water in

Recommended Posts

I am having a terrible time with my Water. Ever since I was a little kid, I just don't really get thirsty. I can work out, walk several miles etc. and I don't get thirsty. The only time I was ever thirsty was when I was pregnant and as soon as my son was born, boom-not thirsty. When I had my ultrasounds back then, they even told me that my bladder was near bursting with the small amount of Water I was told to drink to get a clear ultrasound, and apparently I have an abnormally small bladder. Nothing serious at all, just kind of a "huh" moment. Now that I am being told by the nut to drink at least 64 oz of water a day, I'm drowning and literally peeing every 10 minutes. Just minutes after emptying my bladder, I feel like I have to go again and try to make myself wait at least 10 minutes. If I drink 64oz of water a day, I get up at least 3 times a night to pee! I have even had an MRI of my abdomen/bladder etc. to make sure it is all working correctly. Is this just how I'm going to have to live my life from now on? I'm sorry if it's TMI, but who really has time to pee this much? I feel like I live in the restroom!

Yes, you may have to live in the restroom for a while!

If you don't drink a lot of Water normally, you are probably retaining a lot of Water. Plus, our fat cells are full of water.

I don't know all of the technical ins and outs (note to self research how hydration works) but I know that this is another counterintuitive process. We have to drink more water to lose more weight.

If you are used to waiting until you are thirsty to drink, you will need to break that habit. If you are thirsty you are already dehydrated and it is very hard to catch up.

You MAY find that once you are staying hydrated and urinating frequently that your bladder issues may become more manageable.

Just keep sipping!

I was never a big Water drinker. When I first started drinking Water I kept having to pee. It got better over time. I only get up once in the middle of the night now.

I find that adding MIO to my water makes me drink more. I also drink from a straw (the only thing I have ignored my bariatric program about).

Interestingly enough the pulmonary therapist told me getting up to pee multiple times in the middle of the night was a sign of sleep apnea. I was never tested for it because I didn't have any of the symptoms so my surgeon did not require it. (No snoring, I felt rested in the morning, no excessive tossing turning)

you and me both! i just am not getting 64 oz. however, i just found the trick for me. i visited with my nurse about not getting enough Water. she suggested New whey Protein. it comes in a tube, is 3.8 oz., and has 42 grams of Protein. i bought the fruit one and almost passed out from the smell. it was rank. it tasted horrible mixed with Water. she suggested putting it in water and adding lemon. it was still horrible. i bought the grape flavored. much much much better. the first time i tried it i put it in water and added lemon to try to negate some of the nastiness. it actually tasted good!!!!!!!!!! now i just add about 1/3 of the tube to a glass of ice water and it tastes like grape kool aid. i dont even add lemon. been doing this four days i think, and i am getting lots more water in. i do have to make myself drink it; i am not thirsty either. sit it by you and set an alarm every 15 min if necessary. at the end of the day i have added 42 grams of protein to my diet and that takes so much pressure off of me meeting my protein goals. i dont seem to have a whole lot of appetite either; i have to make myself eat most of the time.

When I saw this thread I thought you meant you have a hard time tolerating the Water. The above advice is good. But are you having an OK time getting the water down in the first place? That is the challenge most of us have at first.

Lol, no I can tolerate the water just fine, it's the fact that I'm simply not thirsty. Before considering surgery I could go 2-3 days before I realized all I'd drank was 2 cups of coffee in the morning and that's it. I just don't get thirsty. So I sit it right by my elbow and try to drink it all day despite not having any desire to drink it. I add mio or crystal light to make it taste better, but I simply don't ever pick it up with the thought "gosh I'm thirsty". Plus it I have to go to the bathroom 50 times a day! From what I've read above my body will get more used to it so I'll keep drowning myself. Thanks everyone!

Two things:

Me, too, about the straw. I can't drink enough without a straw. They say it's about the air in the tummy with a straw, but I burb easily and that's the the ends of it.

Secondly - having to get up in the middle of the night to pee is also a sign of many other things -- including being well hydrated.

I also drink from a straw (the only thing I have ignored my bariatric program about).

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
