I think its a good reminder that although it seems to be the trend to go nuts on Protein and place it as first priority, its all sorts of imbalances that can cause hairloss - not just Protein as people seem to believe.

I really think the overemphasis on protein for WLS patients means that they miss out on other important nutrients that are found in wholegrains and *adequate* amounts of fruit and vegetables.

All things in moderation (including the rate of weight loss) seems to be the way to go, yet again. I really believe its the best outlook.

I take a children's chewable w/iron every day and have been losing a lot of hair for about 2 months now. My weight loss has been pretty rapid , 61 lbs in 5 months and the Hair loss is really frustrating. Of course my Dr. is bald, so there wasn't much sympathy from him - lol ! my nutritionist just told me to try to get in more calories each day - So I do try to. Hopefully this will end soon. I still don't regret having the band tho', since I'm really happy w/ my weight loss so far and feel a lot better already.

Yeah nicnaknut, I have taken Vitamins, and good quality Vitamins all along, prior to banding, and daily since. I tried the bioten, and the zinc....nothing seemed to make a difference other than time....and allowing my body to adjust to the shock it had been through, and adjust to the new diet.

I looked for any answer, and tried the nioxin shampoos, babied my hair, the whole 9 yards---it took several months then suddenly it slowed, and stopped, almost as quickly as I noticed it starting. I was cleaning the shower drain every other day---and dang near burned up my vaccuum! It had so much long hair wrapped around the beater bar!

It is better now, and growing back---so just don't give up hope!

I take a completely different approach to eating with the band and dont do Protein first. I value my fruit and veges more than my Protein. I dont rely on huge calorie restriction but do a lot of exercise instead to make up the deficit. I lost realtively slowly - 85lb over 18 months.

I never lost hair and I also dont have loose skin. I dont take any supplements. I havent died yet from lack of protein. Maybe just lucky, but I do think that a more moderate slower weight loss on a more normal balance of foods, not just focussing on protein is healthier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
