I had surgery Dec. 16, 2015 and have felt pretty good since the first few days. I went back to work last week and had a good week. I am not able to eat much. I am sticking to cottage cheese and mushy Soups along with my Protein shakes. meat or vegetables that are not falling apart get stuck and I feel like I am drowning.

For two days, I have had bad pain around my rib cage, diaphragm and left shoulder up into my neck. I have tried a heating pad. I ran a little fever last night. I am sore to take deep breaths, but I do and it hurts to hiccup. I feel spasms around my ribs. This is similar to the first few days after surgery. I am healthy besides being over weight.

I know I have not been good keeping up with my fluids the past few days. I have been trying to survive. I am at work. I hoped getting up and moving around would help. I am hopeful it will get better. It might me bad gas pain. My abdomen does not really hurt. It is all above my diaphragm. I did have a hernia repair also. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks,

Emily

Call your doctor. Running a fever is not something to play around with after this type of surgery, especially coupled with pain as you describe. It could be nothing, or it could be serious; in any case, get it checked out ASAP.

call your dr. i posted a couple of weeks ago about my shoulder pain while eating and got some good feed back. you seem to be experiencing other symptoms i would see your surgeon. best of luck hopefully its nothing and will pass with time.

Pain in conjunction with fever cold indicate a serious complication. Please call your doctor immediately.

I'm so surprised by just how soon people progress with food. I personally think people are rushing things with trying to eat foods when they aren't properly healed yet.

I went to the doctor and they did a swallow study. Everything looked ok. They put me on reglan four times a day and I am back on Clear liquids for a week, then full liquids the next week. Just like starting over. I can handle the uncomfortable feeling if I know it is not permanent and nothing serious is wrong. Thanks everyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
