I am having trouble quiting smoking, but I let the doctor know that I have been smoking a little bit, and she told me that it was important to quit for post op. I am wondering if anyone smoked the day or days before their surgery? I know it's bad for me, but I think I have to give up one thing at a time. HELP!!

I smoked before, during and after surgery and healed just fine.

THANK YOU!! I needed some reassurance, even though I know it's bad and everyone says you should quit smoking!!! I just needed to hear that someone came out fine!

Some people might be fine, some might not. A lot of doctors won't do the surgery if you are smoking. When your body is coming out of anesthia, the last thing it needs to deal with is no oxygen. You need oxygen!!!!! Quit smoking for your health, is this not why you are getting a band? To improve your health. Makes absolutely no sense to me why you would still continue to smoke. I guess this will be something that boggles my mind when I see this kind of thing. I was a smoker off and on up until about 3 years ago. I started when I was 12. I would smoke for a few years then quit. Start up again for a few years...then quit. It really is about you and your health. I would want to be as healthy as possible coming out of surgery so that my body can get all the oxygen that it needs to heal fast. JMHO

Heehee - you smoked during surgery?

Sorry, just struck me as funny! But I know what you mean

I also smoked before and after...even smoked the day of surgery (before). If you cant quit and you do smoke right before...whatever you do, dont tell them that you did. yes, i am telling you to lie...I know some of you are going to be upset with me for saying this..but hey, truthfully, its not going to put her at risk for anything negative. The way I feel is that once you get your band and start losing weight..you can work on quitting smoking..thats what I did and am now on my way to a smoke free life.

I'm now on 2 days post-op and I quit smoking 2 weeks ago per Dr. requirements. My PCP ordered Chantix and it is like a magical pill. It doesn't give you nicotine, it blocks the brain from the craving. Look it up on the internet if your interested, I swear by it!!!

Oh, I forgot to add that I was only on Chantix for about a month before I was down to 5 cigs a day and decided that I was done! The great thing about Chantix is that you keep smoking while you are on it, so you don't have that "quit date" looming over your head. Your brain will tell you when it's time to not pick up another cig.

Yep I agree with SD Chick. I only had to take the medicine 2 1/2 weeks and then no more cigarettes. I did tell myself July 9 was my stopping day and I had taken CHantix the week prior. It was really, really easy. I don't even need the meds anymore.

Good Luck, Kelli

When you took Chantex, did you do any other therapy along with it? My husband has been taking it for almost a month and he is still smoking.I don't think he even has cut down any yet? any thoughts?

Mal,

I didn't do anything else except pick an end date, nothing else!!!. He has to pick an end date. Then he has to stick with it and the medicine will carry him the rest of the way. He has to want to quite smoking for it to work. Good luck !!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
