I am a 41 year old male and I am scheduled for the sleeve in March. This may sound silly, but do they give you a catheter during surgery? The idea if a male cath scares the hell out of me.

Ask your surgeon; every surgeon is different. If they do cath you, it will be while you're asleep.

I actually asked for a cath, so I didn't have to jump out of bed right after surgery to pee.

My doc asked me to go empty my bladder right before surgery so they didn't have to do a cath.

Same here.

It was one of the many things that my surgeon did that made my sleeve experience a piece of cake. I'd asked him about how long I'd have to have the drain in my side. "What drain? I don't do drains. You'll be fine." I also asked him about what to expect with gas pains post-op? "What gas pains? You shouldn't have any.". And so it went in my pre-op Q&A session with him.

Dude is a surgical wizard and I owe him so much respect. His work has literally given me a new outlook on life.

You'll have to ask your own surgeon. Some may want a cath, others not. For peace of mind, ask, too, if it's routine to place a cath only after the patient is out cold.

Since the idea of a "male cath" scares you, ask for a marsupial cath?

You reminded me that, as I was waking after appendectomy some 30 years ago, I was aware of someone fiddling between my legs. I had to ask, "What are you doing?" to be told that a cath was being removed. I hadn't even known I'd have one and was most irritated at not having been informed in advance. It wasn't the cath that I cared about, but the fiddling in a region that had nothing to do with my appendix. How rude.

also same here. For the basic sleeve your not under that long. My previous surgical experiences where cath was required it was done after anesthesia or epidural and no pain at all.

My doc was a beast too. No gas pain at all. I love that man! His staff is awesome too!!! He was so cute, my first post op visit when I told him everything from post op was absolutely perfect, no pain, no nausea, he patted himself on the back hahaha. We all just laughed.

I had a cath, they put it in after I was out. I was kind of glad to have it the first day... recovery was a bit roug: for the first 24 hours. Taking it out actually wasn't that bad either.

I'm a RN on a surgical unit and get all gastric sleeve patients. I had the surgery by one of our docs. Catheter was placed in the OR. Stayed in until he next day until you went for go series to check for a leak. If negative, catheter came out. Trust me - they will not put it in while your awake. Taking it out - there is some discomfort. May have some notes blood (male patients) expected to urinate within 6-8 hours and it will be measured. Drink (whatever your allowed) and your iv should be at a relatively higher rate 150ml/hr. If you have trouble urinating (they do a bladder scan) but trust me you'll pee! :) good luck!

I had a catheter, but they didn't put it in until I was asleep under anesthesia. I kept it the first day and night then the nurse took it out the morning after my surgery. I was worried and scared just like you are but believe me when I say you will be happy you have it. You will be getting IV fluids and it is pretty painful getting in and out of bed to use the bathroom.

I had a cath that was put in while I was under. Barely even felt it when I was awake. I personally loved having it! I pee constantly so not having to get out of bed frequently after serious surgery was awesome. I was actually sad they had to take it out! Lol! Slight sting when taking it out but it's like "ow." Done.

My surgeon doesn't use catheters for the sleeve but he does for bypass. It must go by surgeon, but typically catheters are placed after you are under. Good luck!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
