University of Chicago supervised weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois PPO. They don't require supervised weight loss before approving surgery. I really want to go to the University of Chicago for a gastric bypass, but I've heard their nutritionist always requires some supervised weight loss before they'll sign off on the surgery. I'd like to avoid this because if that happens I may not qualify for surgery and I don't want to lose all that weight just to gain it back.

Does anyone have any experience with U Chicago? Anyone ever get the surgery without supervised dieting beforehand?

I had my sleeve done there last month. I was required to loose 10% of my extra weight by the nut. It wasn't a problem just follow their advise and you'll loose it. It's better for you at surgery time too since it'll help shrink your liver.

Who's your surgeon?

I have bcbs PPO and have been seeing my pulmonologist at U of C . As of January 2016, bcbs is not accepted and my visits are considered out of network.

I had RNY in September 2015. My surgeon was Dr. Jeffry Rosen, Dr. Allen Mikhail, and Dr. Marin Marinov. My surgery was out out of Lutheran general in park ridge. They also operate out of Good Samaritan in downers grove. The dietician , exercise physiologist , and surgeons are amazing!

I'm not sure if it's at all helpful, but I love the staff at the bariatric clinic at UIC ( now UI Health). Their office is in the Outpatient Center on W Taylor St. They are a tier 1 center of excellence. You might consider checking with them in U of C doesn't work out.

I was with Northwestern and for 2 months and my insurance changed & they didn't take my new insurance. My friend had hers at Mercy hospital Dr. Rambo. I am now at Rush University Medical off of Taylor St. I love them. Way better experience and much more organized than Northwestern & Mercy. You have to see the NUT but I wasn't required to lose but to maintain, eat healthier and def not gain. Surgery is in 4 days. Good luck on your decision.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
