Disneyland - Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend 2016 - 01/15 - 01/17

Recommended Posts

I made a similar post for the "Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend". Just wanted to see if anyone is participating?

Again I'll be "running" the 5K on Friday the 15th. Just wanted to see if anyone else was going to be there. I'll be in corral "B" towards the front if I can. let me know if anyone wants to run together.

Awesome @@LL112! Avengers was my first ever "race". When Star Wars registration came up I wish now I would have signed up for the 10K. At the time I wasn't sure what I was capable of. I'll for sure sign up for the Avengers race next year. I'm planning on doing the 10K at least for that. Who knows maybe I'll step up and do the half.

@@OneDollarBill Not to sidetrack the convo, but how did you get started running post surgery?

I've never been a runner, but kinda have this goal in the back of my head of running a 5K with my older kids (13 and 12) that are both athletic. I'm walking daily, but apprehensive to start jogging. Just curious when you started the process.

@@goblue9280 Like you I was mostly walking. I then switched to interval training. I always started with a 5 minute walk to warm up. Then I would jog/run for 30 seconds, walk 2 minutes and repeat. Once that starting getting easier I started decreasing the walking time, increasing the jogging and also upping the speed at which I was walking/jogging. It's the same approach a lot of the couch to 5K programs use.

I remember when I started I might have been walking at 2.8/3 MPH and jogging at 3.7/4. Now I walk at 3.7 and jog at 5MPH.

The thing I did and my wife encouraged me to do was just sign up for the race and make it a goal. When I originally signed up for the Disney 5K they stated there was a 16 min mile pace requirement (turns out there really isn't for the 5K). That was my goal. I just wanted to be at that level. Well by the time the race came around I was at a 12 min mile pace.

@@OneDollarBill Yeah, that's what I've been looking at doing was the C25K program. I can already walk a couple miles at about a 16.5 minute pace, so I'm getting there. A few walks I've started to jog while counting to 30, but only did that a couple time so don't know how many intervals I could do of that. For some reason I have it in my mind that I need to be under 300lbs before starting the C25K program... so maybe February 1st Looking towards a May 5K.

@@goblue9280 When I started I was under the 300lb mark. Its still a lot of pressure and strain on our joints at that weight. Invest in a good pair of running/jogging shoes. My first pair were the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17 and now I am using Brooks Glycerin 13. I'm logging 50 to 60 miles a month now, so I switch out my shoes every 6 months.

i been running for about 2 years now, i still despise the idea of actually running. but then i go to these events, under the encouragement of friends, i would realize that once i start, it becomes motivating, exciting and makes me feel accomplished. and its with this mentality, i've done 3 super spartans, 2 half marathons and a number of 5 and 10k,. There have been exactly 0 times where i didn't whine and bitch from the moment i sign up to about 1mi into each race, but i have never ever regretted it after crossing the finish line. one foot in front of the other friend! you will love yourself for it.

@@LL112 I can totally relate to this. I some what despise the idea of logging mile after mile on the treadmill. It's a necessary evil to keep or improve your pace. However I was surprised how much I enjoyed race day. The time goes by so fast. For the Avengers run I had my friend running with me and that added to the enjoyment. I did another where it was just myself and found it to be more mental. I had to keep pushing myself as I didn't have a friend help keep the pace going.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
