I was sleeved on 1/4, so I am only a few days out from surgery. I had plans to use this time to do things I used to enjoy like reading for pleasure or working on a puzzle. Just relaxing things that I never seem to have time for normally. But I just don't feel like I have the "mental capacity" for reading or puzzles right now. It's like, of course, I'm here and can think and everything. But focusing for any period of time is exhausting. Even conversations are exhausting. Reading my Facebook feed gets tiring. I feel like my mind is cloudy. Has anyone else experienced this? When will my brain be back to normal?

Yes, I was this way for 3-4 days after surgery. After the cloudiness went away, then came the intense emotions and feelings of "what have I done?". I was an emotional rollercoaster for probably 2 1/2 weeks then everything leveled out. I'm a little over 3 months out now and I've never felt better! Hang in there!

I haven't been sleeved yet but I have read on here that others feel foggy minded for a while.

This is completely normal. There are many factors involved that could be causing this. First off, you were under anesthesia for the surgery and on several meds post-op. Any of which could impair your thinking. This is one of the reasons you aren't supposed to drive while on pain meds.

Secondly, you aren't taking in many calories right now and your body is burning a massive amount of energy to heal itself. You simply don't have the energy to sustain your focus.

Finally, you are probably eating few or no carbs at all right now and carbs are the only form of energy your brain can use.

Yes I have!!! I was sleeved 12/14 and wanted to go back to work 12/28....I work in IT and thinking clearly is essential. My body was ok with the idea but my brain said "I don't think so."! On 12/29 was the post op visit which is also the day I was to begin the bariatric Multi Vitamins. The doc said the fogginess was common and probably a Vitamin deficiency. Think he said "b" in particular. But I did have fog brain and I might be remembering wrong. Starting the Vitamins plus purées lifted the fog and increased my energy. It will get better! I am 3 weeks now and the low energy and brain fog are gone!

The amount of drugs you just had from surgery, and pain meds after... it's a wonder we remember how to do basic things like brush our teeth!

My dad had heart surgery many years ago, and I was visiting him in the hospital, helping him pay his bills that would be due the following days. He was trying to balance his checkbook because he was a bit secretive about me doing it for him. But he couldn't do the simple subtraction and was getting really agitated. It literally was basic, grade school subtraction. He was a former math teacher and chemist and knew how to use a slide rule and do complex algebraic/calculus formulas in his head... so he was really really freaking out.

I had to ask a nurse to come explain all of the mind-altering drugs they would have used during surgery and that he was currently still on for pain management would seriously compromise his ability to think and do even simple routine tasks. And that he'd be just fine in a week or two after it was all out of his system.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
