9 days post surgery questions

Recommended Posts

Y'all are going to think I am crazy. I'll go ahead and preface my questions and concerns.

I went today, for my post surgery doctors appointment, then attended a short nutrition information session. During the nutrition session, three other people who had surgery the same day as me (December 28), all had lost more weight than myself. I was the lowest weight loss, at 26 pounds, as weighed during my pre-surgery visit and labs on December 23rd. I'm very pleased with that amount of loss, but I wonder if I am doing something wrong, or not doing something right? The only thing I have done differently from my pre-op diet is, take in less fluids, for the obvious reasons, and every day to date it gets easier to get my Water intake goal. I'm exercising daily, and have done so since returning home from the hospital post-op. I walk briskly (2.5 mph, for a half mile to a mile, twice a day). Next week, I am going to begin Water aerobics or fitness swimming, because it has little impact on my knees and back. Also today, I was released to advance to the soft/pureed foods phase for two weeks.

So, what can I be doing differently, adding to, removing, etc from my daily routine, to get my metabolism up, and weight loss up?

Thank you in advance,

Craig

One factor is how heavy were you pre surgery. I am at 1 month tomorrow, and I've only lost 21 or so pounds. At 249.6 on surgery day and 5'11", AND ALL ACTIONS BEING EQUAL, I won't loose as quickly as a person the same Water, height, and calorie intake who starts at 360 lbs. Also, they may be sicker than you, or you may be hanging more muscle than them.

But...

This road leads to madness. You are comparing apples to oranges highway cones.

If you are happy, just keep truckin'.

We all lose at our own pace. To a large extent our individual rate of loss is tied to our underlying health status, muscle mass, starting weight and base metabolism. I know, for example, that I tend to lose a little slower than others who had surgery around the same time. I also tend to stall easier. This is likely due to a lower basal metabolic rate.

For example, at 9 days out I had lost 16 pounds which in comparison would seem to be way worse than your results. However, my loss was just fine for me at that time.

If you read through this site one very common thread is to remind us all not to compare our results to others, but just focus on our own journey and goals. It sounds like you are doing great. I'd say keep up the good work!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
