Eight days away from surgery and insurance may not approve!

Recommended Posts

So I did everything that I was told. Six months supervised nutrition visits, Doctor after Doctor clearances and now my surgery coordinator submits for my approval for the 14th and mind you I have been on my pre op diet since last week and she says that Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield is maybe going to deny for one more visit because how they count months!!! This is crazy and so nerve racking. I've been on the journey for a while now and never missed anything and followed the plan. Yesterday was the first time I wanted to give up. I'm trying to have hope that the insurance approves it but they say they're still waiting on clinical from Doctor and of course the Doctor says they've sent it. Feeling depressed for the first time in the whole process. Sorry. I had to vent. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Thanks

I always find it helps to assume the best until you have evidence otherwise. If they do happen to require an extra visit or you have to appeal, it just may mean that you have a small delay.

Stay positive, and focus on what you can do and have faith that everything will work out.

I experienced some long delays due to financing issues and even had to repeat some tests because of the delay, but it all came together at the right time.

Just be positive, proactive, persistent, and patient.

It will be worth it.

I am 9 days from surgery and still waiting approval. I too have empire bcbs. I was told they were counting days so my original date of Nov 30 was moved up to January 18. May I ask what your BMI and co morbs are? I am just trying to get a feel if I will be approved.

Sure my BMI is 44 and I don't have any CM. The insurance people were so nice and I think calling them and staying on top of it was key. You have to have a BMI greater than 40 and six months of nutrition classes or a BMI of 35 or greater with CM plus also the six months of classes and also need the psych eval and such. Hope it turns out good for you :)

@@mrsmissa93 Congratulations! I hope your surgery went well :)

I also have Empire BCBS--would you mind telling me the start and end date of your 6 months' supervision? I will have 6 actual weigh-ins next month but I've heard that they might require 7. My weigh-ins are around the middle to end of each month. I already got denied once so I'm really trying to get things approved correctly this time--any advice would be much appreciated!

I'm going through the same thing with Empire BCBS today was suppose to be my last visit #6 and know I have to go back in March for visit #7 before it can be approved. I hope the process is fast. The office coordinator told me don't worry and that I should be approved for my 3/18 surgery date. Fingers crossed

Ooh....I hope you are all still following this thread. I was submitted to empire bcbs this morning with 6 dietitian visits under my belt. Granted, tomorrow is Xmas eve and the world is generally non-productive for the next week, but how long did it take you to hear back from them? I'm really hoping it doesn't take the 30 days to find out...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
