Pre-op Blue Shield CA question

Recommended Posts

Hi Bariatric Babes!

Does anyone know if BSCA uses the weight from before the 6 month supervised period, or after? I'm worried that I will lose the few pounds that qualify me, but I want to commit to the program. Does anyone have experience in this? I wasn't able to get an answer from my insurance company yet because I've only started the journey.

Thanks!!

I should clarify that I've gone to a Bariatric Center and they've told me that for my health insurance I need to do a 6 month nutritional program, which I can do there. I didn't get a clear answer on whether I'd still be covered if I lost weight during that time, but I'm hoping that my starting weight (today) will be what is used for my bmi for qualification, since -as with most of us- it's easy to lose 10lbs but then it just comes right back anyway!

I have Blue Shields of CA and was told that I have the six month waiting period as well. I am going through the Center's nutrition program and was told not to lose our gain weight just to make sure I hit every appointment. I have conflicting information and have tried to call blue shields to find out about the waiting period but they don't even seem to know what their requirements are. The authorization form that they sent me to give to the doctor mentions they would prefer the patient waits three months but I haven't had time to contact them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
