Hello everyone. This is my first post. I had gastric bypass on December 22,2015. I'm at the two week mark tomorrow. My highest weight was 265. Weight at time of surgery 242. And current weight is 227.

My question is...does anyone find that they are constantly hungry? My body doesn't tell me I'm hungry, so I know it's all mental. I'm mentally hungry all the time and I hate it. Did anyone else struggle with this and if so what did you do to stop the cravings of food.

I'm so happy with this decision I've made, I know it is a step in the right direction, however I find that I'm also just unhappy that I can't eat. I'm sure I sound like such a complainer, but I really want all of these cravings to go away and allow me to enjoy this journey!

I've had the same issue and found that it's a lot like quitting smoking. Even after all the nicotine was out of my body my mind still craved cigarettes. Every day the craving became less. It took a long time but I'm coming up on my 5 year anniversary of quitting smoking and could care less about cigarettes now.

I'm 4 months out from gastric bypass surgery (lost 72 lbs) and still have sugar and white flour food cravings, but as long as I eat 3 Protein first meals a day and drink my Water, my mind doesn't tell me I'm hungry as much.

The false hunger is less now and I think/hope over more time the false hunger will go away completely.

Also distraction helps. When my mind tells me I'm hungry but my body is full, I distract myself with anything that works.

I text a friend, clean, do chores, suck on a piece of sugar free candy or chew a piece of sugar free gum or drink a cup of Decaf tea.

I'd like to say I run out and exercise to distract myself but that feels more like a punishment. ????

Just know it gets better. The more you focus on your health, the less your mind will sabotage you.

You can do this!!! ????????

It gets better/easier the further out you get. A couple things that have helped me:

  1. Stick to measuring out your recommended portion sizes
  2. try and eat meals at the same time each day

I had a lot of head hungry the first few weeks, additionally I never got the "full" feeling from my 1/4-1/2 cup portion sizes. I also stress ate a ton, so anytime I was anxious during the first month or so, I'd get hungry. As @@mishi said, the key really is to stick with it and eventually your mind will adjust to the new normal.

I've noticed I don't have the "full" feeling many have described. I eat slow, chew many times, and the closest I get is a slight feeling in my LUQ. I'm definitely having to stick to measuring out my meals and making sure I stick to my recommended allowances. My other issue is making sure I'm keeping up on my Water intake so I have less "down time" between meals.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
