I am really excited. I have done my 6 months weight management seen a nutritionist and the therapist. I am very eager to get a date but scared at the same time. Can you all that have had the surgery give me some tips on preparing myself and what to expect? TIA

I had mine Dec. 28. I was nervous, to say the least, right up until they put that gas mask over my face and told me to count up to 10. I recall trying to beat the gas to get "4" out of my mouth, but I think I got half of it out. LOL

Woke up in recovery, pain was pretty intense. But, thanks to a wonderful morphine pump which I had control over, I was feeling fine after a few button presses. I was placed in a room after surgery, and within 3 hours, I was out of bed, and walking the hallway, doing the required walking to prevent clots, and to help remove some of the trapped gas from surgery. I walked the halls every few hours until the next morning. Lord knows, they don't let you get any sleep in the hospital, might as well be walking. I used the morphine pump only a couple of times after being in a room the day of surgery. They took the pump the next evening, because I had not used it in 24 hours.

Went home on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Could not drink very much Water or Protein shakes that day, but each day since has become easier and intake has risen to almost where it was pre-surgery. Soreness seemed to increase the first couple of days home, but quickly subsided. The trapped gas is miserable for a while, sometimes felt like I was having a dang heart attack.Today, I am nearly soreness free. Did a mile on the treadmill, no problems. I will be glad when I go to the pureed stage, I am sick of shakes and broths.

Hope that helps.

P.S., since starting the pre-surgery diet until now, I am 31 pounds lighter today, and of those 31, since coming home from the hospital Wednesday, I have lost 9 pounds. Seems like I am losing about 2 pounds a day, which is astounding!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
