I don't know what an MGB is (other than an old British sports car,) but pre-op diet protocols for WLS in general vary widely from surgeon to surgeon from weeks of liquids to nothing at all. My doc only requires the semi-normal day before GI surgery of Clear Liquids and a bowel clean out (same basic thing as is done before a colonoscopy,) for his sleeve and DS patients. From my perspective (and his as well,) the less of that the better, though from the long term success perspective, the sooner that you can adopt/re-adopt an overall healthy eating pattern the better.

Most Drs require "a liver shrink diet" consisting of liquids for at least some time before surgery. During this you take in lots of liquid and Protein as shakes. Shakes can be bought pre-made or made from powders. The purpose of this is to shrink your liver so it is smaller and less sticky thus easier to move to get to your stomach. Your Drs office or nutritionist will tell you all about this. When you know what they want you to there are lots of us who can recommend brands of shakes and help you with support as you go through the process. Good luck.

Hi,

I am booked for a MGB Feb 12th. My surgeon (Gold Coast Australia) only requires 2 weeks of an Optifast diet (Protein type shakes) prior to surgery. Purpose primarily to shrink the liver to make surgery easier as the liver sits in the way :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
