wwboy 141 Posted December 31, 2015 I'm two weeks post op now. As many do, I struggled taking anything by mouth especially for the first few days...no vomiting but just felt super super full after about 1oz. Anyways, after going home, I worked really hard on drinking - but shoot - as you know it was difficult. I think at first I was able to get maybe 30-40 oz per day of Water plus Protein shakes etc. but I'm a 6'1" man and accustomed to drinking at least 100oz of Water per day normally. Since being home I've been dizzy and hazy whenever up on my feet - just generally terrible. Awful. My blood pressure was running low and my pulse was running high. I thought maybe I was getting dehydrated or maybe wasn't getting enough salts in - but I couldn't seem to get to feeling normal. Well this week at my first post op appointment, my blood pressure was very low (at least for me) again my pulse was over 100. They sent me down to the infusion center almost immediately for IV fluids. I felt a little embarrassed about it at first - but dang, as soon as they started putting it in me, I began feeling better. They did 2 liters in 2 hours and ever since then, I've felt great. They were super nice and just encouraged me to try to keep up going forward. I feel like it was just a really good bump for me; like a boost up to stay ahead. Since then, I've been getting 60-80oz per day and feeling much much better. I'm really not dizzy anymore at all - and thinking much more clearly. Beginning the pureed stage today so that makes me feel like there's light at the end of the tunnel. Overall I'm down 50lbs since May 2015 which is when I decided to pursue WLS. About 15 of that is post surgery loss. Hooray! Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted December 31, 2015 I am so glad you were able to get hydration. Dehydration is no joke.
wwboy 141 Posted January 1, 2016 Hi,, I am 10 days out and feel the same way as you . What is more important in the early days, Protein or fluids In my limited experience, I'd say getting enough liquid in is more important than Protein in the early days...but really it seems like almost one and the same thing since it's all liquids at first anyways. rking 484 Posted January 1, 2016 My Protein and Water goals for two weeks were significantly lower than they are now at 6 weeks. I remember aiming for 32 oz of Water and really struggled. Hell, I struggle now to get 64. I don't ever get 64. Ugh. One weekend I felt really bad. It was the only time post op I EVER did not feel really good. Figured out I wasn't getting enough water. So I drank and drank and drank and probably hit 60. Felt better quickly after that. Get fluids first, you will build up the Protein a week or so at a time. It will come . Stay hydrated. GibbsGirl 483 Posted January 1, 2016 My nutritionist said Fluid before Protein. I have been getting in two shakes and as close to 64 oz as I can. But every time I stand up I get dizzy, sounds like I need to push Fluid hard. My blood sugar has also been pretty low. uggg, I feel like I'm floating. Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted January 1, 2016 It's not either or. You should be trying for both. Fortunately, all of your fluids count so drinking a Protein Shake counts as a Fluid. My surgeon was emphatic about the importance of both.
