Protien shake is not my friend :(

Recommended Posts

I am two weeks out of surgery, and on liquids for 6 weeks I can deal with all my liquids apart from protien shake, I have tried it with Water and milk and I end up either feeling really sick/tired and dizzy or making a mad dash to the bathroom (no.2). It's really getting me down as I was told to get at least 60g of protien and my protien shakes makes for 48g of that. My nutritionist said I could use slim fast but I'm not sure as each bottle has only 15g of protien but like 26g of sugar? And surely this would be detrimental to my weight loss.

If any has any suggestions to how I could get protien in I would be super grateful x

I wouldn't use anything with that high of a sugar count myself. You can look into unflavored Protein powder that you can add to foodstuffs like Soup and sugar free pudding. That might help.

If it's any consultation a lot of people have issues with the shakes this early out. I did too, but now at five months out I tolerate them much better, and always have some on hand. I even kind of like them.

Good luck!

I agree. Rather than slim fast, try premier. I also like GNC Lean shake 25 (made with water).

The only shake I would make with milk is the carnation Breakfast essentials no sugar added. The rest I make with Water.

You might also want to try Syntrax nectar.

I have tried Optimum Nutitriton and Pharma Phd whey both with Water and milk still making me feel weird I will look up the premier and see if it's something I can get in the Uk x

Hi. Sorry I am just seeing this. I had severe diarrhea the entire time I was on Protein shakes (I tried several different kinds). Pre op and post op. At my 2 week post op appt my doctor advised me to stop the Protein Shakes altogether. I am not lactose intolerant or allergic to them, my body just wanted nothing to do with them.

Make sure you talk to your Doctor. There is no reason to suffer thru it. I hope you feel better soon.

There are other forms or Protein you can drink aside from shakes... but they are not a meal substitute.. like Isopure or the New Whey protein shots.. Neither of them taste very good to me, but maybe you can tolerate them.

I'm in the UK and through this site, thanks to a post here, found a great supplier of pure whey Protein isolate which is very high in protein and very low in fat. I make my own shakes by using frozen fruits, frozen smoothie fruits, some fruit juice or whatever else takes my fancy. I make up a load in my Blendtec and keep it in the fridge. It's great for when I don't know what to eat or am too lazy to search the fridge!!!! I normally grab a glass for breakfast before dog walking as I leave it to the last minute before climbing out of bed so don't have time for any other kind of breakfast. I found my original blends too sweet as the whey protein has got a slightly sweet taste, so I just buy catering size bottles of lemon juice and lime juice and shove in a good squirt of that. A dollop of fat free Greek yoghurt into the mix is great too. By making your own smoothies it means that you aren't having synthetic additives. They keep for ages in the fridge too.

I see my doctor for my first check up in two days I will mention this to him as I'm certain it's not milk as I drink hot milk before bed any way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
