If anyone had an exact diet plan they followed for the liquid diet I would appreciate it. Mine is for one week. Including amounts and calories. I know they will give me more info at my surgery group meeting but I will be super busy with work and want to start prepping ASAP. Surgery of Feb 9th!

Every doctor has a different pre-op diet, so no one on here could really tell you what your specific diet should be - I've seen diets ranging from straight liquid only for weeks, to no pre-op required at all, to solids (lean protein/cup of veggies) allowed.

You should examine the handouts they gave you, and call and ask to speak to the nurse or nutritionist if you have further questions.

@@FrankiesGirl is absolutely right. From seeing the responses on this site pre-op diets are all over the map, depending on the surgeon. Mine was one week long, three Protein shakes a day and otherwise Clear liquids. I've seen others that were on Clear Liquids only and some that even allowed solid meals. Some were a week, some were several weeks. Others didn't even have a pre-op diet except for clear liquids the day before.

The biggest reason for pre-op diets is to shrink the liver, which is basically a sponge. It's the first place we gain or lose weight, and reducing its size helps the surgeon conduct a more successful and less risky surgery, so most of the pre-op programs are designed to reduce liver size.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
