Hi. I was sleeved on Monday the 28th. Just came home today and have been working on getting my fluids in. They discharged my IV fluids early this morning. So far today ( and the day is just about over) I've had about 20oz of fluids (between broth, Jello and crystal light).

I just started clears yesterday and will have another day of them before full liquids. I struggled to get that 20oz in. Hoping that it'll get easier as the days pass. Every time I drink, I feel lots of pressure until a small little burp comes up, then I known can drink again.

Do you all have to burp before continuing drinking?

Thanks

I had a LOT of gurgling and burping at first! I'm a month out now and can drink pretty normally, it was so hard for me at first because I was super uncomfortable. The more you do it the easier it gets. Every day is a little better.

I happened to me at first, and even 4 months, after I still have some burping issue when it comes to liquids, but it's minor.. I recommend drinking them slowly and in sips during the day..! It will get easier..!

My surgery was on Monday, also. I've been off iv since the 29th. According to the nurses I had, this burping to keep going is incredibly... normal. Is Jello easier for you to get down than just liquids? If I eat jello, I find that the burp doesn't happen.

Go slow and sip. You need to get more than 20 oz in as soon as possible.

For me that meant sip, sip, sipping all day.

Try taking tiny sips (almost drips).

Try sugar free Popsicles, crushed ice, Decaf tea, etc.

Try different temperatures.

One thing that helped me early post op was to put ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrate over a little bit of crushed ice and eat it with a spoon. You could try a toddler spoon or appetizer sized spoon or the tip of a teaspoon.

Just keep at it. You don't want to wind up in the ER with dehydration.

The sooner you can get in all of your fluids and Protein, the better you will feel.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
