I feel Like I'm Ready For The Next Step

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

So it's been 12 days since my surgery, and honestly...I feel great! It's weird honestly, because only 4 days ago I was battling pain, gas, and dehydration. Now, I'm battling boredom from sitting in my house all day! Honestly, my biggest problem is being able to still stick to my full liquid diet. My routine called for me staying on full liquids for 3 weeks, which nearing the end of week 2, I'm starting to feel is mighty excessive.

I wanted to know if slowing introducing some purees into my diet starting the end of my 2nd week would be a good idea. I honestly think I could handle it, and if I couldn't, I would simply go back to fulls.

With me being 17, my mother thinks the idea is terrible and won't even let me bring up the idea.

So, what do you guys think?

I would say stick with the program as prescribed. Just because you are bored doesn't mean your internal incisions are healed.

I would never arbitrarily decide to deviate from my surgeon's orders. I would always consult with my surgeon before making any changes.

If you have any questions about your program then call your bariatric team. That is what they are there for.

No phase of the post-op diet is forever. It is designed to help you heal and recover safely. Please be patient.

Congrats on your surgery and feeling awesome!! If it were me I would stick to my doctors plan. Even if three weeks feel excessive to you- your surgeon must feel it's necessary. In the grand scheme of things one more week is nothing. If you have already done two, then you can do three. You are going so good you don't want to do anything to mess it up. If you are desperate for food you could always call the surgeons office to see what they have to say- maybe they will advance your diet.

You can do this!! Good luck

Let me also suggest that if you are bored, focus on what you can have.

You could try a new herb tea or Water Enhancer flavor. You could try a new Protein Shake or Protein shake recipe.

You could also do something completely unrelated to food: take a walk, talk to a friend, write in your journal, make a craft, do needlework (I recently started knitting and crochetting again -- it keeps my hands busy), etc.

For me, learning how to deal with food cravings when I am bored was a big challenge.

Stick with what your surgeon wants.

Patience my dear. This whole process requires patience and delayed gratification. Start practicing now.

Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress!

Alright everyone, I'll talk to my team, but I'll probably just stick to my plan. Thanks for the advice!

Stay strong, wait till next week and you can look back and say, I made it though!!! I hit a hard place and my Mom sent my Dad over in an ice storm with coloring books and pencils. I have been keeping my hands busy and mind busy with that and listening to TV and it has been easier. I also go back and watch videos of the success stories from my program and pull up some of the same on netflix. Just to remind myself of where I am going. I also just started on riding my indoor bike since it's to cold to walk. You are almost through the hardest part, stay strong.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
