misi324 22 Posted December 29, 2015 Hi. I started my PreOp diet today - surgery scheduled for 1/5/16. I developed a cough due to seasonal allergies and I'm afraid it will cause my surgery to be postponed. I certainly don't want surgery to be delayed, but I imagine if I can't kick it by next week, it won't be good to go under anesthesia or have a persistent cough after abdominal surgery. I called my Dr. and they gave me the OK to take cough Syrup this week. Has anybody gone through anything like this?
Ronjohn 84 Posted December 29, 2015 I had a cough and chest congestion for about 10 days straight before. Started to clear 2 days before, but was still there the day of the procedure. The blowing apparatus they gave me cleared a lot out after. Make sure you communicate with your surgeon.
misi324 22 Posted December 29, 2015 (edited) Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought about the apparatus. Did the coughing and/or breathing apparatus add to your pain or were the pain meds enough? I made it all Fall without these allergies kicking up, then boom! ???? I don't think I've ever started treatment so quickly to allergy symptoms in my life after it dawned on me I might get postponed. Ronjohn 84 Posted December 30, 2015 Coughing was a little sore the first day, but they said it was ok to do. I actually tried to clear it without coughing. If the surgeon isn't concerned you should be good.

otillie03103 123 Posted December 30, 2015 I had a head cold on the day of my surgery and was told that since I didn't have a fever and my respiratory status was find that they would move forward. They gave me some hefty antibiotics during and when I woke up the cold was gone from my head, but slowly moved to my chest. Continue to communicate with your surgeon and while a delay may not be ideal, if it's safer, best to wait it out.
