Recommended Posts

Yes, I had a severe thiamine deficiency in the beginning. I had gastric bypass and the gummy vitamins I had did not contain thiamine. I went to the ER thinking I had severe vertigo. Turned out to be a thiamine deficiency and I received a thiamin transfusion and switched my Vitamins. It is common for gummies to not contain thiamine so be on the look out!

hello, can I ask what vitamins do you take now, I ask because I take the gummies and I checked and my current vitamins don't have thiamine in them and what foods contain thiamine

I am two and a half years post RNY surgery and am still working on making sure that my Vitamin levels are correct. Very rare in bariatric patients, but I developed HIGH Iron. I was instructed by my bariatric doctor to take Gummy Vitamins because they NEVER contain Iron (they are not able to put iron in a gummy). I had my blood work done again earlier this month and it showed that my iron levels are now great.

The other problems that I have been low zinc levels and low thiamine (vitamin B1) levels. I take additional supplements of both with my multi every day. Even with the additional supplement, my zinc level is still low, but is trending up. My thiamine level has been fine as long as I take the extra supplement. Foods naturally high in thiamine are sunflower seeds, some fish, like salmon and trout, pork, and wheat bread.< /p>

I am in search of a new multi that will better fit my needs. One that does not contain iron but has more zinc and B1 in it than what I am taking (Women's One A Day Gummies).

Good luck! This is why it is so important to stay on top of your blood work. In order to achieve the health we want we need to make sure we are getting the nutrients that we need.

RNY folks, there is some evidence for dementia. There is a study on this for 4 year post op, and it relates to thiamine levels. Also see Korsakov Syndrome. With this surgery, as I underatand it, getting blood checked is VITAL. THIS COGNATIVE IMPAIRMENT... is permanent past a certain point. Check.

I like natural iron, and cooking with good cast iron pans helps, so I'm told, but look into nutritional yeast. A heaping tablespoon gives you a ton of iron, 8 g Protein, and makes salad taste like bread. Have used it for years pre op instead of cheese on Pasta with olive oil, and now on zoodles.

Hello everyone....as a reply to an earlier post...I am 2 years post op. I have been taking my Vitamins again. Today is day four...Yea! I have been experiencing a raw mouth especially in the cheeks. It seems to be getting better now. Who would have thunk...LOL. I just got back on Medi-cal and will be seeing a doctor to get my Vitamin levels checked. Thank you to everyone that has responded. It helps to have people to talk to about this stuff. Yes, and more importantly a doctor.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
