I am 2.5 years post op from gastric bypass and 11 years out from total thyroidectomy due to cancer. I initially lost 173 pounds after RNY. and about 1.5 years out started with significant regain. Discovered my tsh level was through the roof so I had no metabolism. Had to significantly increase my synthroid. Now I am back where I should be and trying to relose 85 pds. So disheartening. Anyone else had issues with being synthroid dependent and regain of weight?

I don't have any experience with synthroid. I am 31 months post-op from RNY surgery. I have spent the last 24 months in Maintenance mode. The following short articles describes my experience with weight loss in Maintenance mode. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

Thanks for your reply James. I take synthroid due to not having a thyroid which controls your metabolism. It is a replacement thyroid medication. When your tsh-thyroid level gets really high your metabolism gets very low which s what controls weight loss and energy. Even though I was doing the maintenace phase I was still gaining weight at leaps and bounds due to my body not being able to burn any calories. I am praying that now that my medication is straight I will relose the 85 I need to. I am back on the initial eating pattern of 900 calories a day. 100 gms Protein and less than 50 gms of carbs as set by my dietician. We are thinking the initial lack of absorbtion was the cause of my medication no longer being enough. My dose has been more than doubled. But Thank God I still remain off blood pressure meds and my diabetes meds. Congrats on your success!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
