How on earth is anyone getting enough Water?

Surgery 12/14/15, almost 2 weeks post-op.
According to my nutrition book, I'm supposed to only have up to 2oz/ hour, but I have to drink 3 8oz Protein shakes/day, and that doesn't leave a ton of time for drinking water. When you add in not drinking anything for 30 minutes prior to and following a meal, I literally have ZERO time to drink any water :(
I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing here, but this can't possibly be right!! Helpppp me :(

I know it is very difficult in the first 8 weeks to get all your Protein and Water in. Honestly you have Protein stores for quite some time and the hydration is the most important thing.

As the swelling goes down, it will get easier for you.

These were the priorities I was given in order

48 - 64 ounces of Water or liquid

70gr protein

Vitamins

It was literally 8 weeks before I could get it all down. Just do the best you can.

The requirement is FLUIDS. The Water or milk in your Protein shakes counts towards your requirement. A glass of milk counts. The Water you drink when you take your Vitamins counts. The water in a bowel of Soup counts. For me water lost its taste after surgery. But Crystal Light provided some flavoring. Later I transitioned to tea. I would drink a cup of hot cocoa (no sugar added variety) during the winter when it was cold. So it wasn't as difficult as I originally thought.

I don't actually have a requirement for fluids, I am just WANTING water!

I feel like all I do is choke down Protein Shakes trying to get my Protein (that's what my nutritionist stressed was most important), and I am constantly thirsty!

I have a veryyyy hard time waiting 30 minutes after I eat to drink anything. My mouth feels so nasty all I can do is think about water! It's pathetic, really.

I had surgery 12/16/15 and was told I needed to drink at least 2 ounces every 15 minutes but just through trials I realized I can drink 8 within 15 minutes without any problems, just try to take in as much as you feel you can at a time.

You don't have a requirement for Water? Are you sure?

I have never seen anyone who hasn't had a requirement for a minimum of 64 oz of Fluid a day. Hydration is critical.

Also, are you sure you have to wait 30 minutes after a Protein shake to drink Water? When I was on liquids I was sipping something all day.

Please double-check with your NUT.

I'm positive. I have read and re-read all my books about a million times. There's literally nothing about Fluid requirements. It only says (at this point) 3 8oz shakes per day.

I can sip water with my shakes, but at only 2oz/hour one shake alone takes me 4 hours to drink. So it takes me 12 hours just to get my shakes, then with 30 minutes before and after, plus 30 minutes to eat each meal, that's 1.5 hours per meal, and another 4.5 hours a day. I'm looking at 16.5 hours just to get in my small meals and shakes, and feel like there's no time left for anything else.

I have left messages with my nut and my dr., but the office was closed last week for the holiday (and I just came off liquids Monday) so I've just been trying to wait it out ????

The 3 8 oz shakes gives you 24 oz of Fluid, so you only need to get in at least 40 more ounces of Water. Can you sip more frequently? I literally sipped all day during my first few weeks and did not go to sleep until I had reached my goals.

Before surgery I would gulp down a bottle of Water. I don't like water so the quicker it's down the better. I had surgery on Dec 14. I can't gulp down water or anything else now. I'm having a hard time choking down the Protein Shakes. It seems like everything makes me nauseous. Ironically, water taste the best to me. Does anyone else get nauseous frequently?

I don't understand the 2oz per hour requirement. I was drinking much, much more than that, even in the hospital. I haven't had trouble drinking; in fact, I've been surprised that I haven't had to take itsy bitsy little sips. I'm not guzzling or gulping, but I take a normal drink. Then I take another one. And maybe another one. And I keep doing that throughout the day, when I can.

I only need to drink two Protein shakes a day (12 oz) so that helps.

hang in there and happy drinking!

I don't get it either. My whole nutrition book makes little sense to me. I'm very confused by it!

Apparently everyone else is able to pretty much drink as much as they want, so I'm not sure why it says not to!

This is very common right after surgery. Try sipping (tiny sips). Try water enhancers, Decaf tea, herbal tea, and different temperatures. Just keep trying. It does get better.

Sip, sip, sip.

Are you sure it's not a 2 oz per hour minimum and not an upper limit?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
