My surgery is scheduled for February 9th. I have heartburn currently but I know it's from a poor diet. When I've ate well before it has gone away. But things like coffee, juice, cucumbers, Italian food, they all trigger it. My surgeon doesn't see the need to scope me because I don't have signs of a hernia but his nurse was insistent upon it (of course it would be more money to them since I'm paying out of pocket). My question is, if you had heartburn before and had the sleeve did it get worse? Did eating better make it better? Anyone have this corrected during surgery? What's up?

I had severe heartburn before surgery... I had a hernia also... when I got my sleeve I got my hernia repaired. I probably had heartburn up to a couple weeks after surgery. Even if I don't take my omeprazole for a week I no longer have heart burn ^_^! But everyone is different.

I had my sleeve surgery 11-16-15 and have had severe heartburn starting 3 weeks post op. I also had heartburn pre-op, but meds seemed to help. Part of the problem is I have no desire to eat which allows for acids to build up. Dr. put me on Zantac which does help. The other issue is when I do eat, I am struggling to chew, chew, chew.... Take your time and follow dr. orders. Don't be afraid to ask dr. for help if heartburn does occur. Good luck- You can do this!

I would definitely recommend getting checked for the hiatal hernia since you already have heartburn. My experience was I didn't have any heartburn before my sleeve. After my sleeve I developed heartburn and acid reflux. It is manageable by taking Prilosec and not eating two hours before I go to sleep. However, we are all different.

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll mention it to my general dr since she's on my insurance and go from there. Good ideas! I can't wait to have the surgery over with. So nervous!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
