DR switched from Bypass to Sleeve right before surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My Dr. recommended I switch from the Gastric Bypass to the Gastric Sleeve today, he wants to do it in two parts. Gastric sleeve first to lose weight and then to the Bypass later on. Have anybody had this done? He also said if I am satisfied with the weightloss from the sleeve I can just stick with it and get the Bypass. My surgery is Monday 12/28.

@@courtnojudge90 - did he explain medically why he felt that was necessary??? is he doing the bypass for free? Does your insurance cover revisions???

Sorry but I see red flags popping up everywhere unless there are good answers to those questions.

"start" with the sleeve? Then why not do the bypass now?

Are you okay with surgery again for a bypass? does your insurance cover revisions? second opinion?

playing devils advocate here...

At the seminar I attended, the surgeon said for larger or patients with many co-morbities, they will start with the sleeve because it is a simpler surgery and has less complications than the Bypass surgery. Then once you loose some weight and you are healthier, they may do the Bypass. But nowadays many people do so well on the sleeve, they end up not needing the bypass.

Actually, that was why the sleeve was initially developed. They found that so many patients did so well with the sleeve that they didn't have to go in and do a bypass for many of them.

If you have a skilled and experienced surgeon, I would listen to his advice. His primary goal is to keep you safe and alive and to perform a successful surgery.

I started with an extremely high BMI and was sleeved April 20. I couldn't be happier.

@@courtnojudge90 - I didn't know that was common to start with sleeve and revise to bypass with people of a certain size. I knew it was developed after the bypass, but didn't know about the revision surgery for higher BMI patients.

If your insurance allows for revisions then go for it. If in doubt get a second opinion.

I probably would but that is me.

I don't know this just sounds very odd to me. I would consult with another surgeon.

I was told by my surgeon that the sleeve procedure what first used to help acid reflux patients.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
