Depends on your surgical team. They should give you a copy of your plan. If you wish to know now contact them for a copy.

There are as many plans as there are offices.

I was given a copy as well of everything that is required during the pre op phase.

Who is your surgeon in Texas?

Yeah, it's going to be completely dependent upon your surgical team's requirements. Some people don't have a pre-op diet at all. Some people have a liquid only diet (protein shakes). Some people are allowed real, high Protein foods. Some people are Protein Shakes most of the time, but one Smart Ones or Lean Cuisine meal a day. The plans are really all over the place, so no one will be able to answer this question for you.

Your plan will probably be different, but mine was:

  • 3 Protein shakes a day (I was provided specific nutritional guidelines for the shakes)
  • 1 green salad with calorie free dressing (I was provided a list of veggies I could include in the salad)
  • Unlimited sugar free Jello and Popsicles
  • Occasionally allowed chicken broth or minestrone Soup, but not every day

This is something you need to ask your NUT. I didn't have a liquid diet for pre-op. Mine was high Protein, low-carb (with absolutely NO starches).

Each surgeon is different.

Besides following your specific plan , stock up on SF Popsicles. These were a lifesaver for me the first few days of the liquid diet which for me were the toughest.

Mine was a choice of either 4+1 or 3+2 Protein Shakes to small meal combos. My meals were 4 oz of lean Protein and some non starchy vegetables. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
